Nursing Education Specialist-Perioperative Units

Job Summary:

  • The Nursing Education Specialist (NES) works collaboratively to assess, plan, implement and evaluate educational activities through a systems model for the department of patient care services staff including orientation, continuing education, and competency programs.
  • Roles of the NES include learning facilitator, change agent, mentor, leader, champion for scientific inquiry, advocate for Nursing Professional Development specialty and partner for practice transitions.
  • Responsible for on boarding, orientation and transitions of patient care staff within the perioperative units.
  • Provides leadership and support to graduate or re-entry nurses, across the continuum, to promote excellence in providing patient care within the perioperative units.
  • Responsible and accountable for program design and development and coordination of all program functions which ensure the successful transition of novice nurses from an academic or deferred work setting to the complex healthcare environment of today’s standard.
  • Enhances the delivery of patient care in accordance with the standards of nursing practice through education, role modeling, standards development, and proctoring as needed across the continuum with a collegial and interdisciplinary focus.
  • Provides ongoing support and feedback to new nursing personnel in regards to high quality, efficient, patient centric care and documentation that meet the high regulatory demands within the perioperative units.
  • The NES will work collaboratively with the nursing leadership team and with organizational development to establish a unit based orientation program, inclusive of ongoing support during the first full year of hire, and a competency validation plan.



Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited school of registered nursing.
  • Master’s Degree in Nursing or healthcare/education related degree required, Master’s in Nursing preferred. (Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing is required if Master’s Degree is not in Nursing).

License and Certifications:

  • Current California RN license required.
  • Certification of Operating Room Nurse (AORN) preferred.
  • Current BLS and ACLS certification required.

Experience, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Working knowledge of health care practices, patient care equipment and products within the perioperative areas.
  • Minimum of 3 years clinical experience in an acute care perioperative setting.
  • One year of clinical education experience required, 3 years preferred.
  • Simulation experience preferred.
  • Must demonstrate and maintain current knowledge and skill in providing care for perioperative patients.
  • Data collection and management and the ability to conduct literature searches and critique appraisals required.
  • Demonstrates ability to evaluate patient’s physical and emotional status.
  • Demonstrates ability to provide patient care based on age-related and cultural needs.
  • Possesses teaching ability, leadership ability, and high professional standards.
  • Must be well organized, able to set priorities, work independently and as an effective team member.
  • Word Processing skills required.
  • Statistical/data management skills preferred.
  • Knowledge of regulatory processes required (TJC and
    Title 22).
  • Ability to interact in a professional manner with administration, medical staff, and hospital personnel as well as external customers.
