Summary of Role:

The New Homes Quality & Training Field Manager (FM) is the subject matter expert (SME) for all aspects of the PV installation and construction of systems across SunPower’s exclusive products portfolio and many installation platforms. The New Homes Quality & Training FM serves as the main point of contact for quality assurance and training of SunPower’s New Home’s Installing Partners (IPs) and is responsible for delivering world-class training and solar installations. They are the experts on solar photovoltaic installations for new home construction. Relationship management with IPs’ crews, foremen, and operational staff is a critical part of this role to ensure the accurate, quality delivery of our solar installation. The Quality & Training FM must be able to understand and interpret designs, blueprints, install manuals, cutsheets, datasheets, various construction-related documents, schematics, and electrical single line diagrams (SLDs). The Quality & Training FM will be required to understand PV wiring, branch circuits, wire sizing and equipment schedules, over current protection device (OCPD) size requirements, grounding and general residential electrical systems from main service panels (MSP), load centers and subpanels, low voltage (LV) wiring, and communication circuits associated with SunPower’s monitoring equipment (PVS6).


The Quality & Training FM works closely with internal stakeholders, such as the New Homes Field Manager (FM), Builder Operations Manager (BOM), Installing Partner Manager (IPM), Field Operations Manager, Account Managers (AMs), and external stakeholders, not limited to: the Installing Partner (IP), crew members, team leads, foremen, IP Ops managers, builder superintendents, and local AHJ inspectors when applicable. The Quality & Training Field Manager reports directly to the New Homes Quality & Training Operations Manager and is tracked on job performance and key metrics, including: number of side by side trainings completed, warehouse trainings, quality audits for rough wires, PV installs/trims, OneRoof pan installs, review of FM Quality audits deemed as failures, and completion of assigned trainings in SunPower University.


This position includes expert competence in various types of installation methods and products, including, but not limited to: SunVault Energy Storage System (ESS), InvisiMount, OneRoof, comp shingle roofs, inset comp shingle (tile roof), tile hook, stanchion, TPO roofs, and various mounting attachment types. The Quality & Training Field Manager shall be extremely proficient in flashing and waterproofing methods, electrical equipment, electrical safety, personal protective equipment (PPE), ladder safety, fall protection systems, knowledge of electrical codes and best practices, general new home construction and building codes, build cycles, and scheduling of installs. It is paramount to ensure field-based sub-contractor teams are working effectively and safely.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Work directly with installation partner (IP) crew leads and their office staff to ensure installations are performed to SunPower specifications.
  • Conduct quality audits on PV installs, rough wires, electrical trims, and OneRoof pan installations.
  • Work interdepartmentally to resolve field issues and provide world-class customer service to both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with SunPower’s Quality & Training Operations Manager to train and performance-manage IP’s to all SunPower-related products and installation processes.
  • Identify any elements of community construction that may need extra attention to ensure timely solar installation and building department inspection.
  • Provide closed-loop feedback and learning regarding field issues communicated via the FM, commissioning team, and other stakeholders.
  • Use software tools available, in real-time, to look up plans, drawings, manuals, and documents and provide information in a structured manner.
  • Perform side by side training of contractors in the field, working alongside crews on the ground and roof.
  • Perform warehouse trainings to support new product integration and roll-out to the field.
  • Attend online training and certifications as applicable.
  • Review Quality Audits submitted by Field Managers and JCO checklists submitted by IPs.
  • Follow up with IPs on quality issues and provide continued training and support, including access to trainings in SunPower University.
  • Write Scope of Work (SOP) and other documents as required.
  • Review plans and offer guidance to internal teams.
  • Perform take-offs and material lists.
  • Provide guidance and support as needed for resolution of Notice to Correct (NTC) cases.
  • Other duties as required at the discretion of the Quality & Training Operations Manager.


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years experience in PV, residential construction, or related trade(s).
  • Proficient in the installation of roof penetrations, electrical circuits, solar modules, grid-tied, and microinverter applications.
  • Strong understanding of National Electrical Code, California building code, residential electrical, and roofing systems.
  • Ability to read construction drawings and electrical line diagrams.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel between job sites, including out of town and overnight stays as required.
  • Valid driver’s license.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree
  • NABCEP Installer certified
  • OSHA 30 certification
  • First Aid/CPR certificate
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with online CRM tools and document repositories, such as SalesForce and BOX
  • Experience with construction apps (e.g., GoCanvas, SafetyTek, etc.)
  • Experience with Storage Systems.


Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to traverse/maneuver the job site for extended periods of time and survey/assess all aspects of the construction process.
  • The position regularly works in outdoor conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, cold and freezing temperatures, and exposure to poisonous plants, insects, and allergens.
  • Must hold a valid driver’s license and can travel between warehouse and job sites.
  • The environment of this position is a combination of both office and outside, external customer home and job sites.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use both hands; is frequently required to stand, sit, stoop, talk, and hear (communicate verbally in person and via telephone); and must be able to read computer screens, correspondence, and reports.
  • The position requires travel, with potential for overnight stays between assigned facilities and various locations within the community (less than or equal to 10% travel).
  • At times, the job may require lifting up to 50lbs.
  • The job requires the following types of vision: close, distance, peripheral, and depth.
  • Work in an office environment and sustain posture in a seated position for moderate periods of time.
  • Hearing must be adequate to perform job duties in person and over the telephone.
  • Able to communicate orally with management, co-workers, and the public in face to face, one on one, and group settings.
  • Able to use and learn standard field operations equipment, standard office equipment, and technology with proficiency.
  • Able to carry an extension ladder and access two-story roofs.
  • Able to work from height and in the heat or cold for extended periods.

Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment criminal background check, a 7-year driving history report, and a drug screen.
