Job Description

The Nursing Graduate works under direct line-of-sight supervision of the Registered Nurse in the clinical setting and participates appropriately in the patient care delivery process. The incumbent also orients to the RN assignment, excluding independent nursing care. This position may participate in medication administration under the direction and supervision of the licensed RN.

Scope

The Nursing Graduate job can be utilized for up to 12 weeks while employees are in the Intermountain Nurse Residency program and they are working toward preparing, testing, and passing the State Boards examination (obtaining an RN license). After that 12 week period, or if the Nursing Graduate fails the State Board exam a second time, the employee can no longer remain in the Nurse Graduate job. These employees can apply for any open jobs they qualify for, including jobs requiring a certification the employee currently holds (i.e. CNA, etc.). Failure to either pass boards or to be hired into another job will result in termination.

Registered Nurse graduates must be enrolled and have started coursework in the Intermountain Nurse Residency program before providing direct patient care (including direct patient care supervised by a licensed RN). If the hire date of the Nurse Grad does not align with the start date of the Nurse Residency program, then any nursing unit orientation performed prior to starting the Nurse Residency cannot include direct patient care. Employee may complete CBTs or other indirect learning, but may not perform patient care until they have attended the first Nurse Residency class.

There will be multiple openings you can apply and be considered for in the Salt Lake Valley Area. Interviews will be held weekly and you will be able to preference shift, facility, and department within the following units (if available):

  • Acute Cardiovascular Unit (Intermountain Medical Center)

  • Cardiovascular Procedure Recovery Unit (Intermountain Medical Center)

Schedule

All positions are Part time, 24 hours/week or PRN. Shifts will vary by department . There will be call requirements and the rotating of weekends and holidays. You may work one of the following shifts:

  • 50% days, 50% nights on a rotating basis

  • Seniority based self scheduling shifts

  • Straight nights or straight days

Minimum Qualifications
Current RN License in state of practice or official college transcripts.
- and -
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers.
- and -
Unit specific certification as required (i.e., ACLS, PALS, etc.).

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Basic computer skills.
- and -
RNs hired on or after January 1, 2021 who have 12 months or less of working experience as an RN prior to joining Intermountain must obtain their BSN degree on or before June 1, 2026.*

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN). Education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Degree will be verified.

Physical Requirements:

Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.
- and -
Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.
- and -
Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.
- and -
Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc).

May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.
