SUMMARY: The Medical Operations Manager is responsible for operationally integrating all aspects crew health and performance during Private Astronaut Missions (PAM) to the ISS and future Axiom Station missions. They will lead the Med Ops team in the development and maintenance of the medical operations plan, medical system, research and monitoring protocols, and technology. This position will also coordinate Med Ops support of the design and development of the Axiom Station, working collaboratively with various core system engineering disciplines, medical operations, and vendors within Axiom Space and externally with partner organizations.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical:

  • Lead individuals and teams providing operational integration and mission support for private spaceflight missions, including direct Axiom employees, contractors, and consultants
  • Provide medical mission management for assigned missions, including mission planning, integration, inflight and post-flight mission management support
  • Lead the development of concept of operations, procedures, tools, console support products, group documentation, training, certification, and on-orbit procedures characterizing crew health and performance for PAM missions, as well as for Axiom Segment design
  • Working in partnership with Axiom Segment element systems engineers, provide support to ensure crew health and performance operational needs are addressed in the design and implementation phases for Axiom Segment

Organizational:

  • Under the direction of the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and Deputy CMO

oLead the development of Medical Operations team processes and procedures to ensure effective team communication and organization

oManage personnel on the Axiom Medical Operations team, including supporting the CMO and Deputy CMO in making hiring, training, performance appraisal, and termination decisions

oProvide back up budgetary management support as required

Education & Experience

  • BS or MS Degree in a science, medical, or engineering discipline required
  • Minimum 15 years NASA experience with greater than 5 years as an ISS BME
  • Experience managing the day to day work and performance of advanced degreed professionals
  • Demonstrated knowledge and awareness of NASA and Medical regulations for astronaut safety and health
  • Knowledge, familiarity, and experience working with Shuttle, Soyuz, SpaceX, and/or other human-rated spacecraft program
  • Demonstrated medical integration skills and experience
  • Knowledge and awareness of NASA and medical regulations for astronaut safety and health
  • Understanding of flight rules for crew safety
  • Knowledge of NASA requirements and ability to interface with appropriate NASA organizations
  • Knowledge and experience working with medical data and HIPAA
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as an emergent leader during high stakes events
  • Experience with industry standard software tools and programs, with a desire to innovate and push boundaries in how they are utilized, including but not limited to design, development, training, visualization, inventory management, logistics, data analytics, and project management
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NASA standards related to crew health and human performance and their role in risk management
  • Personnel management including hiring, performance management, and termination decisions
  • Budget management
