Job Description
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital under the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technologist for the campus in Jamaica Plain.
The Medical Laboratory Technologist will perform diagnostic testing in Chemistry, Urinalysis, Hematology, Blood Bank, limited Microbiology and Serology and will provide information and laboratory testing results to Nursing and the Medical Staff. Will maintain records of patient results and quality control. Must be able to work independently. Will receive supervision from the Director of Clinical Lab and Pathology, Lab Supervisor II and Microbiologist III.
Please note: The shift hours for this position are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (40 hours per week), Monday through Friday and rotating weekends. Incumbents must be willing to be on-call, work varied shifts and/or irregular hours, i.e., weekends, holidays and nights.
Duties and Responsibilities (these are a general summary and not all inclusive):
  • Performs testing in Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, Urinalysis and Coagulation as well as limited testing in Microbiology, Serology.
  • Performs patient testing, proficiency testing and all required quality control as determined by each department.
  • Records and communicates laboratory results, both normal and abnormal to medical/nursing staff.
  • Performs required quality control of all reagents and equipment.
  • Inspects and evaluates laboratory equipment, making minor or routine mechanical repairs and/or adjustments as needed prior to testing. Performs scheduled calibration of equipment as required by each laboratory department with appropriate documentation.
  • May provide guidance to employees of a lower grade.
  • Documents remedial action when deficiencies are identified with quality control instrument problems or other laboratory related situations.
  • May be required to work any shift other than the designated tour of duty as deemed necessary by the Director of Clinical Lab/Pathology or his/her designee.
  • Will be required to work independently (alternate weekends).
Required Qualifications:
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relations with others.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions, ability to communicate effectively both verbal and written.
  • Knowledge of the quality assurance practices (e.g., equipment maintenance, proficiency testing, method validation, staff competency, following standard operating procedures) specific to microbiology, immunological, and molecular biology test methods in a diagnostic setting.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certified American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Medical Technologist.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of phlebotomy, proper labeling and handling of specimens.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of medical technology.
