Salary Range4,750.00 - 6,072.00Job SummaryThe purpose of this position is to provide routine safety inspections, servicing and maintenance for a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment including emergency response, heavy and light construction, light automotive, vacuum, jetter, aerial lift and dump trucks, sweepers, paving equip., trailers and a variety of power-driven specialty equip. Locate, diagnose, and repair mechanical deficiencies; design, and fabricate parts to adapt fleet to meet working requirements of departments as a part of setup and/or later modifications.

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt position covered by the provisions of an agreement between the City and the Joint Labor Coalition union. The schedule for this position is swing shift, M-Th, 3:30pm-2am (4/10’s).Job Details

Essential Functions:

  • Perform safety inspections and preventative maintenance on all city vehicles and equipment. Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, differentials, high and low voltage electrical, multiplexing, electronics, air and hydraulic brakes, suspension, steering, heating and air conditioning, hydraulics, hydrostatic drives, pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, cranes and emissions. Diagnose mechanical failures; repair port fuel injection, propane systems, electrical, exhaust cooling, emissions after treatment, and diesel regen. Maintain particulate filters, turbos, air intake, ignitions systems, and overall performance of engine.
  • Record work time and material records related to repairs in vehicle maintenance system to ensure proper billings. Assist with the research of specialty parts and best solutions for the job. Keep pace with the changing industry through research of new diagnostic tools and training on new technology.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, computers, alternators, high voltage power generators, starters, batteries, distributors, relays, switches, and low and high voltage lights. Diagnose and repair high-pressure air systems and hydraulic and high-press water and paint systems, including pumps valves, rams, hoses and motors.
  • Inspect, repair and maintain air brakes; overhaul, inspect and maintain, air dryers, compressors, air lines, slack adjusters, hydraulic brakes, lining, cylinders, master cylinders, hydro boost, vacuum boosters, lines, valves, rotors and drums. Inspect, repair, and maintain tie rods, springs, shocks, gear boxes, rack and pinions, drive axles, bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, alignment, air bags, levelers, torsion and torque rods, tires, and wheels
  • Diagnose and repair drive trains of trucks, cars and heavy equipment, manual and automatic transmissions, hydrostatic driven transmissions to propel and hydrostatic transmission drives for pumps, blowers, vacuum systems, chain and belt driven propelled equipment, and propeller shafts.
  • Provide mobile repair to assist crew when they experience a problem in the field. Repair and maintain stationary generator plants at various city facilities. Secure roadways or construction zones.
  • Research and design best set up options for vehicles and equipment being put into service. Research and install load security, safety devices, warning lights, backup cameras and alarms, traffic control devices, communications, GPS location, audio devices, computers, fall protection, and tool mounts. Install and secure specialty equipment for specific work applications.
  • Design, fabricate and assemble unique or obsolete parts using MIG, TIG, electric arc, and gas welding, brazing and soldering to mild steel, stainless steel, aluminum and cast iron. Use appropriate safety equipment; cut metal using gas, plasma torches, metal cutoff saws and grinding. Modify or straighten body and chassis damage; recondition mounted sprayers. Fabricate tools for departments. Repair field items including catch basin grates, pipe joints, gates and playground equipment.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

  • Three (3) years of diesel, automotive and alternative technology maintenance work experience and drivability diagnostics.
  • Associates degree in Applied Science with automotive or diesel study or related degree, along with electronics training.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills

  • Proficient in the use of vehicle maintenance systems, preferably RTA Fleet Management System.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Outlook and Internet Explorer.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

Possession of:

  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license
  • Possession of, a class “A” commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement
  • Possession of a forklift certification
  • Possession of a valid CPR/First Aid card
  • ASE certifications in at least one applicable series preferred

Ability to obtain:

  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a class “A” commercial driver’s license with tanker endorsement within one year of hire
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, an emission certification within six months of hire
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a forklift certification within six months of hire
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid CPR/First Aid card within three months of hire

Knowledge

  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in the overhaul, repair and maintenance of gas, diesel, alternative fuel and technology powered equipment e.g. propane, bio-diesel, renewable fuels, hybrid and electric.
  • Environmental safety and clean up requirements
  • Handling of wastewater contaminated equipment, hazardous solvents, and solutions
  • Safety procedures for paving equipment
  • Procedures of preventive maintenance related to automotive, heavy and light construction equipment
