Job Description

The Manager of Software Engineering at Progyny reports to the Sr. Director of Software Engineering and is responsible for supporting the Director in leading and managing the team. This includes responsibility for developing and managing cross-functional processes, contributing to project development, developing and maintaining software engineering best practices, coordinating with tech leadership to set the technology direction of the organization, and determine technology requirements for team projects.
What you’ll do:

  • Review existing solutions, projects, and infrastructure to provide recommendations for enhancements and structural improvements.
  • Review and support Engineering Management and Program Management with project design and technical specifications prior to development.
  • Lead new products and pipelines to create technical requirements and develop a solution that meets business functionality.
  • Lead engineering projects with application developers, users, operational leadership, and subject matter experts to understand current and future operational goals.
  • Identify risks to project success, develop mitigation strategies where possible, and communicate impacts to Engineering and Program Management.
  • Serve as a point-of-escalation for project-specific issues and as a team SME for internal architecture and potential impacts.
  • Contribute to all parts of the software development and deployment lifecycle, including design, development, documentation, testing and operations.
  • Contribute to the core development of the project by leading Python development efforts for API and ETL projects while using best practices/frameworks to ensure the project is of high quality and standard.
  • Debug, trace, and profile existing code to ensure uptime and maintainability.
  • Regularly support in the maintenance (including documentation) and enhancement of Software Engineering managed systems to optimize performance for business needs.
  • Develop and document software engineering best practices in collaboration with the Director of Software Engineering (e.g. SDLC, ReadMe/repo documentation, code review, test case development, dockerization, error logging, etc).
  • Execute a consistent team experience with 2-3 direct reports through coaching, mentoring, team build activities, and scheduled individual development
  • Support in the training the team on best practices for consistent project execution.

About you…

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • 4+ years experience in Software Engineering or Web Development roles.
  • Advanced experience in developing and debugging in Python, PHP, or similar programming language.
  • Very comfortable with Git and remote service such as GitHub for version control.
  • Strong experience working with MySQL or similar relational database systems.
  • Strong experience with Docker.
  • Strong experience with AWS or similar cloud service.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD Pipelines such as CircleCI, Jenkins and GitLab CI.
  • Strong experience with developing and maintaining large-scale data ETL pipelines.
  • Strong experience in assessing, developing, troubleshooting, and enhancing RESTful API systems for performance optimization, increased scalability and security, and development standards.
  • Ability to prioritize, communicate well, design for repeatability and scalability, exude ownership, and dig beneath the hood with technology.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Flexibility to both improve what we have in motion and to innovate on new capabilities.
  • Experience with AWS Lambda or similar serverless computing is a plus.
  • Experience with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB is a plus.
  • Experience in IaC_ tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation is a plus._
  • Proficiency with front-end development in HTML/CSS and JavaScript frameworks such as React, Vue, or Angularis a plus.
  • Experience with Cloud Networking is a plus.
