Job Description

Maintenance Worker

Job Summary:

To perform maintenance work on district buildings and grounds to ensure a safe, efficient and exemplary environment for students and staff.


Reports to:

Maintenance Supervisor, Grounds Supervisor, and Deputy Superintendent of Operations


Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of three years of experience
  • Demonstrate communication skills
  • Demonstrate public relations skills
  • Minimum age of 18 years
  • Ability to perform job responsibilities
  • Valid New Mexico Driver’s License
  • Must complete a fingerprint background check

Desired Qualifications:

  • Three years of experience in the field
  • Specialty/Certificate training (boiler, asbestos, electrical, plumbing, etc.)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follow local, state and federal law, adhere to the State Public Education Department Regulations and follow Aztec School Board Policy
  • Able to effectively diagnose problems with a variety of building systems using diagnostic equipment
  • Advises the Maintenance Supervisor, Grounds Supervisor, and Deputy Superintendent of Operations on the condition of the school and site facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs
  • Operate safely and efficiently small and large equipment such as lawn mowers, weed-wackers, forklifts, tractors, backhoe, snowplows, etc.
  • Operate safely and efficiently man lifts and use proper fall prevention equipment
  • Follow all safety requirements, safety guidelines and safe work practices.
  • Attend, participate in and lead department meetings as assigned
  • Develop, perform and log preventative maintenance work for district buildings and grounds
  • Complete assigned work orders in a timely manner
  • Perform emergency maintenance repairs as needed
  • Assist other Department personnel as needed
  • Meet emergency situations in accordance with operating procedures
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with students, employers, school staff, parents and the public
  • Complete required reports in a timely and professional manner
  • Successfully complete all training programs and all continuing education requirements in a timely and professional manner
  • Coordinate the purchase of needed equipment and supplies with the Maintenance Supervisor and Grounds Supervisor
  • Complete monthly roof inspections, may need to access the building roof using an extension ladder or roof hatch
  • Keep grounds clean, mowed, and free of debris and weeds (prune trees, spray for bugs, mitigate other rodents, fertilize lawn, etc) with approval and guidance from Grounds Supervisor
  • Repairs various items, systems and/or components (e.g. roofs, furniture, bleachers, fences, playground equipment, concrete walkways, air conditioning equipment, door locks, lockers, pipes, valves, fittings, clogged drains, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition
  • Responds to emergency situations (e.g. broken/clogged pipes/drains, faucets, gutters, sprinkler heads, grease traps, fixtures, etc.) for the purpose of resolving immediate safety concerns
  • Maintains tools and/or equipment (e.g. hand and power tools, cafeteria and athletic equipment, heating and ventilation equipment, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of equipment in safe operating condition
  • Paints walls, floors, woodwork and fixtures, using appropriate materials and tools
  • Uses personal protective equipment, as appropriate
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities
  • Maintain good public relations within the school district and community
  • Follows local, state, and OSHA regulations
  • Reports all accidents and/or potential hazards to the Maintenance Supervisor, Grounds Supervisor, and Deputy Superintendent of Operations immediately, or as soon as reasonably possible
  • Handle additional duties as assigned
