Maintenance Assistant


Position Summary

Responsible for assisting the maintenance supervisor with repairs and upkeep of the facility.


This hourly, non-exempt position reports directly to the Environmental Manager, Maintenance Manager, or Personal Care Administrator and is a member of the Environmental Services Department.


General Purpose

To assist the maintenance supervisor inside and outside of the facility; performing gardening, lawn care, painting, plastering, minor equipment repairs and snow removal as requested.

Position Responsibilities

  • Completes work orders as assigned.
  • Completes preventative maintenance on equipment as assigned.
  • Keeps accurate records of maintenance performed.
  • Assists in the testing of facility systems, including fire alarms, smoke detectors, exit door alarms, emergency exit lighting, nurse call system and emergency generator.
  • Replaces light bulbs as needed.
  • Prepares surfaces for painting. Fills nail holes, cracks, and joint with putty, plaster or other filler. Applies coats of paint, varnish, stains, enamels or lacquer to redecorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimming and fixtures of the facility.
  • Repairs partitions, doors, windows, floor, furniture and building framework, as assigned.
  • Assists with plumbing repair, replacement and assembly as assigned.
  • Installs floor tile, baseboard, wall covering, and ceiling tiles as assigned.
  • Maintains facility grounds, which includes cutting grass, cleaning the yard, trimming shrubbery, raking, planting and weeding. Cleans parking lots and driveways. Removes snow from sidewalks and driveways and spreads sand, salt or ashes to prevent slipping.
  • Store supplies and tools in a neat, clean and orderly manner. Maintains work area in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Assists in upkeep of laundry and dietary equipment, such as cleaning dryer and exhaust fans.
  • Assists with fire drills as requested by the maintenance supervisor.
  • Assists with the safety program to provide a safe working environment and prevent injuries.
  • Functions independently with minimal supervision.
  • Complies with laws and regulations applicable to position and acts in accordance with facility compliance program.
  • Attends and participates in in-service trainings.
  • Treats all residents, visitors and staff with courtesy.
  • Performs physical activities including standing, lifting, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting.
  • Follows facility dress and hygiene policies.

Safety

  • Knows and follows facility rules.
  • Demonstrates proper use of equipment, reports when equipment needs repair.
  • Follows facility smoking policy.
  • Reports and documents any incidents or accidents of residents, staff or visitors to the appropriate facility personnel.
  • Performs duties, which may include transportation of residents, as assigned in Facility Disaster Plan.
  • Follows infection control standards, policies and procedures.
  • Uses required protective equipment.
  • Reports all hazardous conditions/equipment to Supervisor.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

Essential Knowledge, Skills and Ability

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience: Prior experience working in HVAC, plumbing or general maintenance preferred.
  • Ability to handle tools and equipment, make proper calculations for repairs or reports.

Position Hours and Travel

This position is a full-time or part-time job located in a designated home with travel as required. Shifts may vary based on the needs of the facility.


Compliance Program

The Grove Manor Corporation is committed to compliance with program requirements and ensuring that employees understand the value the Facility places on its compliance program. All relevant personnel will participate in compliance education and training programs of the Facility. Employees will be required to have a minimum number of educational hours per year, as appropriate, as part of their employment responsibilities. Participation in training programs is a condition of continued employment. These training requirements will be a factor in each employee’s annual evaluation.

  • Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to walk, reach, climb, bend, stoop, lift, grasp, balance, push, and pull residents. The employee must be able to lift, push, and/or move up to 75 pounds, with or without assistance. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Additionally, employees must have the ability to hear and respond, distinguish smells, tastes, and temperatures.
  • Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to hazardous chemicals, infectious waste, blood and body fluid, diseases, and conditions prevalent at the time. Employees may also be subject to emotionally distraught residents, family members, visitors, and personnel. The noise level in the work environment is typically minimal to moderate.
  • PPE: Personal protective equipment will be provided, used, and maintained when it has been determined that its use is required to ensure the safety and health of our employees and that such use will lessen the likelihood of occupational injury and/or illness.


Affected employees whose jobs require the use of PPE will be informed of the PPE selection and will be provided PPE by Grove Manor Corporation at no charge. Careful consideration will be given to the comfort and proper fit of PPE in order to ensure that the right size is selected and that it will be used.


Personal protective equipment must not be shared between employees until it has been properly cleaned and sanitized. PPE will be distributed for individual use whenever possible.


Any worker required to wear PPE will receive training in the proper use and care of PPE before being allowed to perform work requiring the use of PPE. Periodic retraining will be offered to PPE users as needed.
