Logistics Packaging Engineer

As part of a diverse and hardworking team of specialists you will establish and maintain authority over packaging, handling, shipping and transportation requirements for various spaceflight systems. You will share in the team’s impact on all aspects of support all transportation and logistics functions to ensure on-time delivery of products. You must be able to identify product requirements to ensure environmental control, shock isolation, contamination is maintained for via all modes of transportation (Land, Air, Rail, and Sea).

This position will work with internal stake holders and customers as well as external suppliers to ensure all requirements are met and comply with industry and military standards. The candidate must provide relevant support function activity, including accuracy and timeliness of data processing, report generating, problem analysis, and all other customer-specific inquiries. Must be willing and capable to work in a team environment. To do so, you are a proactive, service-oriented individual with excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Oversee and manage complete packaging development process, including the creation of packaging designs, prototype development, and performance testing.
• Analyze engineering drawings and specifications of product to determine physical characteristics of item, special handling, environmental and safety requirements, and types of materials required for packaging. Ensure packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
• Troubleshoot new and existing packaging problems involving designs, materials and processes and provide creative, timely, and cost-effective solutions
• Work closely with suppliers, engineering, product management, operations, and sourcing.
• Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage.
• Oversee and help with loading and unloading of flight hardware and provide backup to Logistics shipping functions.
• Research create cost estimates, for improvement in transportation options.
• Support extensive travel throughout the US as required for PHST activities

Qualifications:

• A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or packaging engineering is required. Must have 5+ years of experience in industrial aerospace PHST function
• Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards
• Proficiency in 3D CAD software
• Experience in Logistics, Transportation, and Shipping aerospace hardware minimum 5 years
• Experience with Shipping Department functions which include material handling, packaging delicate aerospace hardware and, hazardous materials, and raw materials including metals minimum 5 years
• Calculating weights and dimensions using proper tools and methodologies

• Analytical skills to define problems, collect appropriate and relevant data, establish facts, and draw reasonable conclusions
• Ability to safely drive a forklift and perform elevated work
• An attitude of world-class quality, attention to detail, and dedication
• Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

• Experience in manufacturing, aerospace, medical or military environments
• Experience with all modes of transportation vendors
• Experience with International Shipments
• 49CFR Hazmat Certification for all modes of Transportation
