Primary Purpose of Position:This position will model, redesign and generate working drawings for new and existing manufacturing processing equipment and tooling. Position shall have responsibility for various engineering assignments including: Application analysis, Component and assembly designs, Packaging solutions development, and Plant layout, Component sourcing, and Completion of engineering assessments and resolutions within constraints of specific objectives and target dates. This position will accomplish assigned projects and tasks utilizing assistance and support from designated project team personnel to include: internal project resources, expert resources, external supply sources, and external contractors.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Provides engineering expertise and leadership in the following areas:
    • Create digital 2D and 3D drawings of existing components. Analyze mechanical, thermal and potentially flow properties using FEA
    • Hands on approach to the execution of engineering projects, focused on plastic extrusion and plastics molding, but also including manufacturing plant utilities, work flow, as well as coordination of materials and labor.
    • Contributor to a team of technical personnel, serving as design and engineering support for industrial equipment design and installation, start up, testing/experiments, as well as development of documentation, including LifeMade specific work instructions, procedures operator training and technical manuals/SOPs.
    • Identify improvements to the manufacturing process and assists in planning for such improvements, engaging fully and collaborating directly with production-process team to do so, to include: environmental, electrical, mechanical, production, safety, tooling and quality control aspects.
    • Determine alternative solutions and presents to Engineering/Plant management, as appropriate.
    • Prepare models and drawings for plant and equipment layout, focusing on safety, work flow and utilities management, compliant with Engineering document standards and processing.
    • Assemble specifications lists and prepare requests for quotations. Coordinates needed spare parts with Plant and Engineering teams.
    • In conjunction and coordination with engineering team, execute experiments and tests to aid in the development and validation of manufacturing process improvements, to include all associated documentation, recordkeeping and retention requirements.
  • Coordinates activities of outside contractors, as required.
  • Participates in product design changes.
  • Relies on educational and practical experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:EducationBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Equivalent experience may be considered.


Experience/Knowledge
  • Thorough working knowledge of computerized systems, networking and various CAD systems, including SolidWorks and AutoCAD.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of administrative and management functions such as planning, organizing, coordinating, directing and controlling, electrical & mechanical equipment, process flow techniques, and state and federal health, environmental and safety rules and regulations.
  • Understanding of electrical and mechanical workings of a variety of production machinery and processes, with ability to generate, read and understand all associated drawings and schematics.
    Solid communicator and team player.
  • Analysis and calculation of properties in: Mechanical Function, Finite Element Analysis, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics and Flow, Electrical Control Logic.
  • At least 5 years of experience in the field or in a closely related area.
Certifications/Licenses/RegistrationsProficiency in CAD and related software: SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and Minitab. Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma (Green Belt of Black Belt) – practiced and beneficial
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Competent understanding of mechanical and heat transfer properties applicable to thermal and protective packaging design and solutions.
  • 1 Year or more experience with plastics extrusion and molding.
  • Ability to consult on complex projects
  • May lead and direct the work of others, including professional contractors.
  • Ability to analyze problems and make independent judgment to make recommendations for corrective action or resolution.
  • Demonstrated ability to display diplomacy in day-to-day interactions with the commitment to task with awareness of urgency. Ability to prioritize projects. Flexibility to deal with interruptions and reprioritize as needed.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Sitting at workstation approximately 50 percent of work time. Standing and walking approximately 50 percent of work time.
  • Must be able to travel 25-50 percent of work time.
  • Ability to work overtime or occasionally on weekends with short notice.
  • Typical office environment with shelves overhead and above work surfaces.
  • Typical floor environment is hot in the summers and cold in the winters requiring safety glasses and ear plugs.
