Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs all treatment as directed by physical therapist.
  • Keeps abreast of new techniques and trends in the field of physical therapy.
  • Can appropriately and safely administer all treatment modalities in the physical therapy Department and has a basic understanding of each modality to include hot packs, cold packs, ice massage, diathermy, ultrasound, phonophoresis, iontophoresis, static and intermittent traction; all positions cervical and lumbar, whirlpool, electrical stimulation by TENS, neuroprobe, high voltage, galvanic stimulation, EMS, interferential muscle stimulation, Russian stimulation, paraffin, intermittent compression and other treatment modalities as instructed by the physical therapist.
  • The Assistant can safely and appropriately administer the following procedures according to standards in the policies and procedure manual; therapeutic exercise to include passive, active, active assistive and resistive exercise, extremity joint mobilization, strain/counterstrain, deep friction massage, myofascial massage, manual massage, gait training with any type of assistive device, debridement and dressing of open wounds, teaching correct posture, problem solving regarding performance of job activities and teaching appropriate work postures to reduce physical stress and strain, teaching good body mechanics, instruction in use of pulleys, exercise bicycles, home traction units, resistive exercise equipment, functional training (bed mobility, supine to sit, sit to stand transfers) and patient and family education.
  • Can make basic assessments of a patient’s status to help determine if patient needs reassessment by the therapist before proceeding with treatment or if there is a more frequent need to reassess the patient than originally determined by the therapist.
  • Basic assessment is also necessary to comply with documentation requirements requiring objective data to reflect changes from original findings and if goals are being met or if goals need to be restated.
  • Basic assessment should include changes in range of motion, functional levels, locations of pain, strength measures, wound appearance, sensation, vital signs, and swelling.
  • Assists therapist by providing oral and written instructions in home care activities and exercises to patient and family.
  • Always notifies therapist of patient’s response to treatment and when assigned treatment has been completed.
  • To maximize productivity standards, always proceed to next patient awaiting treatment, seeking therapist’s direction as needed.
  • Is capable of performing all activities in the technician receptionist job description in their absence or if patient volume dictates need for assistance with technician’s activities.
  • Can learn and perform new procedures accurately with three or less occasions of instruction and review of procedure.
  • Each week, monitors the assigned work of all technical staff through observation, discussion, and documents the results.
  • Maintains neat, legible, accurate, and organized written records.
  • Is knowledgeable of all supplies and procedures and knows locations of all supplies.
  • Performs daily progress documentation on all patients for which he/she is directing and providing care that day, according to standards established in policy and procedure manual.
  • Assists technicians as needed with cleaning of treatment areas before and after patient usage, including whirlpools, exercise and treatment tables and pillow cases, etc.
  • Stays available in treatment areas, with patients, supervising exercise, interacting with patients, when in-between treatments. If two support staff are available and in between patients, one staff stays in treatment/gym area at all times, as noted above.
  • Assist with supervision of P.T. technicians on a daily basis.
  • Provides positive feedback and encouragement to clients which will enhance their motivation and desire to improve.
  • Is always considerate, caring and understanding when dealing with client’s family and other members of the care team.
