Job Description

This position is located at MCAS YUMA, AZ . Candidates selected for this position will serve as a SUPERVISORY LIBRARY TECHNICIAN.

Major Duties

MAJOR DUTIES: Supervisory Library Technician position- is located in Personal & Professional Development, Education and Career Services – Library at MCAS Yuma.-.

The primary mission of the library or information center is to organize, manage and provide relevant and timely information to meet the educational, technical, professional, and recreational needs of active duty military, their family members, college students, retirees and civilian employees. The library also serves as a resource center for off-duty education programs ranging from preschool to high school to college degree programs.

The work performed by the incumbent varies over a wide spectrum of library or related information, and over many levels of responsibility and complexity.

Performs a variety of general office and clerical tasks in support of library operations. Answers the telephone, takes messages, and refers callers to appropriate staff members. Partners with the Marketing Department to advertise all library programs and activities.


Plans and conducts programs for all ages, to include but not limited to Lap Time for ages 0-3 years, Story Time for ages 3-6 years and at least one monthly library event. Develops and creates weekly programs using Makerspace items such as sewing/quilt classes, using sewing machines or sergers, and craft classes using the Cricut machine.

Responsible for checking library materials in and out, and verifies that customers are authorized to use the facility. Registers new customers, issues library cards, and files applications. Explains library rules, regulations, circulation procedures, and entitlements to library customers. Takes requests for reserves and inter/intra library loans, and periodically checks to see that requests are filled. Accurately compiles and records statistics on library programs such as attendance and number of programs, etc.

Provides professional program assistance to the supervisory librarian. Assists in planning and executing programs without repetitive instructions from the supervisory librarian. Fosters cooperative working relationships with patrons and employees.

Submits recommendations and requests for new library materials to the supervisory librarian. The receipt of new library materials and rearrangement of existing library materials will require the lifting of medium sized boxes of books. Maintains an awareness of needed changes in procedures, policies, and processes.

Provides ready reference and research assistance to library customers. Patrons include military personnel and family members; school aged children, civilian employees, and college students. Provides reference searches by devising and adapting various search strategies within the library’s holdings and utilizes on-line databases and various resources to provide reference services to customers. This task involves interviewing and interacting with customers to establish their needs and requirements. Patron requirements are analyzed and appropriate information resources are located and selected. The information resources include books, periodicals, government documents, photos, maps, and other archival holdings.

Supervises three or more technicians and volunteers. The incumbent is responsible for the following personnel related duties, but not limited to: planning and preparing schedules, maintaining time-keeping files, making individual work assignments, instructing employees in specific tasks and job techniques, monitoring standards of service, providing advice and guidance to subordinates, approving leave, resolving personnel related conflicts, setting written performance standards and completing yearly performance appraisals.

Performs other duties as assigned.

This is a white-collar position where occasional lifting up to 20 lbs may be required.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. Three years of experience that demonstrates knowledge of basic and well-established library procedures related to routine and repetitive aspects of major library functions or three years of education experience in a Pre-K, Elementary, Middle or High School setting.

Ability to supervise subordinate employees to include communicating work direction and assignment from supervisor, giving on-the-job training, coaching, facilitating, and resolving work problems.

Knowledge and experience in clerical and administrative procedures such as typing, operating copy machine and audiovisual equipment, managing files and records, compiling statistics, to include good organizational skills.

Knowledge of Microsoft Office software and applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with customers, using proper tact, diplomacy and professional customer service.
