Job Description

This is a Nashville Public Library Civil Service position located at the Main Library. We are seeking a dynamic, energetic and uniquely talented individual to provide system-wide leadership for Teen Services. The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for engaging teens in library services through inventive and effective strategies. This position also oversees and supervises daily operations of the Main Library Teen Services area. Performs related duties as required.

Typical Duties
  • Leads the department in professional standards and best practices for program
development, readers’ advisory, outreach activities and reference work.
  • Creates an inviting and welcoming space for a diverse teen population.
  • Provides friendly, courteous and accurate service to all users.
  • Hires, trains, evaluates, supervises and manages the Teen Division Main Library staff.
  • Assists in the development of department goals and objectives.
  • Maintains department statistics over time in order to prepare monthly and annual reports.
  • Assists in development of department budget and oversees appropriate expenditures of
funds.
  • Inspires Teen Services staff to try new and creative ventures to improve the library
experience and quality of life for youth.
  • Plans, organizes and directs programming and activities for teens on a department and
system-wide level.
  • Performs outreach to nurture partnerships and collaborations with community organizations.
  • Represents Nashville Public Library in the community and at professional events.
  • Conducts group in-service and individual training as needed.
  • Attends continuing education and networking events
  • Maintains appropriate communication and attitude with library staff and users.
  • Develops and maintains regular communication with schools and other youth-based
facilities.
  • Oversees the recruiting, scheduling and activities of staff and volunteers in Teens Division
  • Maintains library materials collections.
  • Works with administrative staff to prepare the budget.
  • Works with administrative staff on strategic planning, initiatives, events and formulation of
library policies.
  • May write or assist in writing grant proposals.
  • May oversee or coordinate implementation of grant funded programs.
Minimum Qualifications

Master's Degree in Library Science from an accredited college or university and four (4) years of professional library experience with teen's programs or services, including two (2) years acting in a lead or supervisory capacity.

The Library Science program must also be accredited by the American Library Association or the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Extensive professional teen services experience and demonstrated ability to
plan, implement and direct innovative teen programs.
  • Fluent bilingual language skills.
  • Knowledge of library philosophies, practices, procedures and technologies, especially in
services to teens.
