DutiesSummary

About the Position: The Directorate of Operations (DOO) provides law and order, fire and emergency services and protection operations. Its main mission is to provide a safe and secure environment for the Service Members, civilians and families that work, live or visit our installation.

NOTE: Competition for Security Guard positions is restricted by law to persons entitled to veterans' preference as long as such applicants are available for appointment.


Responsibilities
  • Assures the timely accomplishment of security and related inspection work
  • Checks work progress and makes day-to-day adjustments based on work priorities
  • Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques, and provides on-the-job training to new employees in accordance with established procedures
  • Answers questions of employees on procedures and regulatory directives and obtains decisions and information on problems
  • Serves as a member of a three-man team stationed at the access control point/entry control point vetting and searching vehicles entering the installation or as a member of a roving patrol on foot and by radio equipped vehicle within the installation
  • Performs 100% ID check of all personnel attempting to access the installation
  • Prevents unauthorized or inadvertent entry into limited and exclusion areas
  • Conducts basic and refresher security guard training through classroom presentations and practical exercises
  • Conducts training exercises in the use and functions of all firearms available and used by the guard force to include of a variety of weapons and the actual qualification firing of all members
  • Evaluates performance of members to determine effectiveness of training and advice and assistance in improving performance.

    • This is a Term position scheduled Not to Exceed 6 Years. Term employment is subject to a one year trial period. Employees serving a trial period can be removed with limited appeal rights.

    In order to qualify, you must meet the requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.     Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: (1) Experience controlling access or patrolling restricted and limited access areas; (2) Experience assisting with on-the-job training in order to broaden guard skills; (3) Experience leading a group of security guards or law enforcement personnel. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

    Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone-no substitution of education for experience is permitted.

    This is a TERM appointment, NTE 6 Years. Individuals selected for this term position may be eligible for conversion to career-conditional appointment at a later date. To be converted, the employee must (1) have been selected for the position under competitive procedures, (2) must have served 2 years of substantially continuous service in the appointment, (3) be selected under merit promotion procedures for the permanent position, and (4) have a current rating of "B" or better.
