General Description:
SEAMAAC welcomes applications for the position of Lao Outreach Worker. SEAMAAC is a nonprofit organization in Philadelphia, with the mission “ To support and serve immigrants and refugees and other politically, socially and economically marginalized communities as they seek to advance the condition of their lives in the United States.” SEAMAAC envisions a strong and unified society, where immigrants and refugees work alongside other Americans to build shared political, economic and social power. We envision a community where the contributions of each generation of Americans, whether Native to this land, immigrant, or brought against their will, are equally acknowledged, valued and embraced, and where all people live whole, healthy lives with joy and dignity.

Primary Function:
The Lao Outreach Worker serves SEAMAAC’s clients in a culturally and linguistically appropriate, polite, and professional manner. He/she conducts outreach to immigrant and refugee communities, facilitates group activities, provides health and social service education, provides interpretation/translation, and conducts case management with immigrant and refugee clients. He/she increases clients’ awareness of, access to, and participation in a variety of health and social service programs.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor degree in social work or related discipline preferred, minimum high school education or equivalent required.
Experience: At least two years of experience working with ethnic and racial minority communities and/or urban communities.
Language Abilities: Spoken fluency in English and Lao required, with written fluency in English and
Lao. Additional dialects or languages highly desirable .

Additional Skills:

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Excellent presentation and group facilitation skills.
  • Computer skills; ability to use technology such as Microsoft Office Suite and electronic databases.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • Proven track record of being a self-starter, ability to work independently while observing and complying with all standards of the supervisory structure of the organization.
  • A strong passion and a clear vision for delivering high impact services that are culturally and linguistically appropriate to the Lao immigrant and refugee communities.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle a heavy workload, exercise discretion, maintain confidentiality, handle multiple priorities, and use sound judgment.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with clients and colleagues.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to issues of race, class, nationality, religion, age, gender, sexual orientation, and disability.
  • Understanding of and sensitivity to intergenerational issues affecting low-income immigrant/refugee elders, adults, and children.
  • In-depth knowledge of the Lao immigrant and refugee communities.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Expectations: Create and implement outreach methods to increase awareness of SEAMAAC’s programs. These methods include but are not limited to: interpreting/translating documents, conducting educational workshops, posting and distributing flyers, phone campaigns, and attending community fairs, events, and functions.

  • Develop strategies to build a client base including but not limited to partnership with co-workers, colleagues from partner organizations, community leaders, community outreach, and community media establishments.
  • Accept client referrals and enroll clients in SEAMAAC programs as appropriate.
  • Provide case management services to immigrant/refugee families within the guidelines of the assigned program(s). Case management priorities will fluctuate based on client needs and program funding. Focus areas currently include but are not limited to domestic violence, health care navigation, elders, public benefits, and linkages to community resources.
  • Facilitate group level services to clients within the guidelines of the assigned programs.
  • Assist Project Coordinator with organizing and implementing group programs and special events.
  • Provide translation of program materials for SEAMAAC programs.
  • Conduct data entry; maintain electronic data and detailed client files according to department and contract guidelines.
  • Actively participate in organization-wide work efforts and events.
  • Comply with contract performance measurements for public and private funders.
  • Provide culturally relevant education to the community.
  • Participate in in-service trainings, meetings, and committees.
  • Work with the H&SS Department team to continuously improve service delivery to the community.
  • This position requires some local travel to meetings, community events, and/or client appointments primarily in but not limited to South Philadelphia.

Salary and Benefits

Hours: Approximately 20-25 hours/week, contingent on grant funding. Hours are primarily during regular business hours, with expectations of flexing to accommodate community activities occasionally during evenings and a minimum of five (5) weekend assignments per calendar year.
Salary: $15/hr.
Benefits: This position is a part-time position that only offers paid sick leave based on an accrual basis.
