Position Overview:

  • The Lactation Consultant is responsible for providing lactation consultation and education for breastfeeding mothers at Alta Bates Medical Center regardless of age, race, religion, ability, and economic or social status.

  • The Lactation Consultant has excellent assessment and implementation skills to assist the breastfeeding mother attain her individual goals.

Job Description:

EDUCATION
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Required

CERTIFICATION & LICENSURE
RN-Registered Nurse of California Required
CLE-Certified Lactation Educator upon hire Required
IBCLC-International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, within 2 years of employment Required
BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider Required


EXPERIENCE

Minimum of two years experience in perinatal nursing or perinatal education. Minimum two years experience counseling breastfeeding women.

Experience supporting breastfeeding in NICU preferred


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

Excellent communication skills

Excellent maternal/infant assessment skills

Ability to effectively prioritize work responsibilities

Excellent documentation skills

Effective teaching skills

License/Certifications:

BLS-Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider - American Heart Association, IBLCE-Certified Lactation Consultant - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners, RN-Registered Nurse of California - California Department of Consumer Affairs
