Job Description

This position requires a TOP SECRET clearance. Candidate will support the Joint Staff J7, Deployable Training Division (DTD) in conducting joint and multi-national training, exercises, and staff assist visits (SAVs), primarily with Combatant Commands and Joint Task Forces. This program provides joint matters education and training for joint commanders and their staffs, focusing on the joint operational and strategic levels of war. The candidate will be responsible for conducting training for Combatant Commanders, Joint Task Force commanders, Service Component commanders, and their staffs with emphasis on the Joint Planning Process (JPP). The position requires thorough knowledge of national defense strategy, theater strategy and campaigning, joint planning processes, and the integration of multinational and interagency capabilities. The products provided to the customer include systemic and functional lessons learned, both in written and oral presentations. These lessons are applicable to current joint operational procedures and serve as the basis for future training requirements.

Primary Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Provide subject matter expertise and act as trainer in the JPP at the strategic and operational levels
  • Integrate with and contribute to the DTD Plans Branch, consisting of military and contractor trainers
  • Provide functional continuity within the Plans Branch
  • Mentor new Plans Observer Trainers
  • Observe and train Combatant Command, Joint Task Force, and Component Command staffs at command post, tabletop, and planning exercises; staff assist visits; academics; and Senior Leader Seminars
  • Prepare and conduct functional out briefs with the staffs and provide written functional reports
  • Assist in developing Facilitated After-Actions Reviews for the Commanders and staffs
  • Assist in developing and reviewing “Insights and Best Practices” and “Focus” papers
  • Provide facilitated seminars on joint operations for the KEYSTONE, CAPSTONE, and PINNACLE programs as part of the Senior Leader Education Program for the National Defense University.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BA + 8 years of experience or MA + 4 years of experience
  • Thorough understanding of, and experience in, the Joint Planning Process (JPP)
  • Must be willing to travel (current average travel is approximately 90 – 120 days per year) to support worldwide (to include areas considered hazardous duty) training events
  • Joint Force Staff College or Service equivalent required for commissioned officers
  • U.S. Citizen with an active Top Secret level security clearance
  • Applicants selected will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information, to include Sensitive Compartmented Information (SCI)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in Combatant Command or Joint Task Force future operations/plans organizations
  • Joint Professional Military Experience, Phase II (JPME II)
  • Experience in the preparation and conduct of seminars/study groups for general/flag officers
  • Experience in the compilation and presentation, in both written and oral formats, of lessons learned and after-action review material
