Investigator II
JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for investigating crimes.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Obtains facts or statements from complainants, witnesses and suspects.
- Queries various computerized databases, governmental agency files and other sources to identity data on suspects, victims and complainants.
- Interrogates suspects of crimes.
- Analyzes completed police reports to determine additional requirements for investigative work.
- Records the progress of investigative supplemental reports.
- Maintains organized informational files for each assigned report.
- Responds to and examines crime scenes to obtain clues and evidence.
- Processes, photographs and collects latent fingerprints.
- Preserves, processes and analyzes items of evidence.
- Prepares and executes arrest and search warrants.
- Prepares operational plans and risk assessments.
- Conducts surveillance.
- Transports and escorts prisoners.
- Represents the State's interest at bond hearings.
- Coordinates with Victim/Witness Advocate in assisting and notifying victims of legal proceedings.
- Prepares prosecutorial summary of the investigation for the Solicitor's Office.
- Testifies in Municipal Court, preliminary hearings, grand juries, general sessions and other courts.
- Coordinates with outside agencies and serves on interagency task forces to combat specific types of crimes as necessary.
- Briefs Patrol Division regarding status of investigations and recent crime trends.
- Responds as a Patrol Officer as needed.
- Provides information and assistance to the public.
- Operates computers with a wide variety of applications and functions.
- Assists other law enforcement agencies as needed.
- Serves as back up to co-workers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- High School Diploma or GED. Some college preferred.
- Three (3) years of experience in law enforcement required. One (1) year as an Investigator preferred.
- Any combination of education and experience totaling three (3) years may be considered.
- South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy certification or the ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
- Valid South Carolina Driver's License.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of local, state and federal criminal and civil law.
- Knowledge of investigative techniques.
- Knowledge of human behavior, physiological research methods, the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders.
- Knowledge of the procedures, guidelines and equipment used in law enforcement activities.
- Knowledge of the geographic layout of the City.
- Skill in the use of firearms and other specialized law enforcement equipment.
- Ability to successfully complete police officer certification through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy.
- Ability to use computers and various software programs, to include Word and Excel.
- Ability to work under pressure, in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 50 pounds of force to move objects and the following physical abilities: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking. Must maintain physical conditioning to be able to perform all duties of a police officer according to departmental standards. Maintains the ability to perform all duties including making forceful arrests and firing a weapon.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work is typically performed in the field, frequently outdoors in inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices. Employee is exposed to hostile and volatile situations and may be exposed to situations that are life-threatening.
