Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Preservation Services Supervisor is responsible for the management, coordination and oversight of the centralized operational activities and workflows of service programs at the Conservation Centre located at the Science Park Library Annex. This individual supervises the conservation team (full-time, part-time, interns and student employees) and serves at the payroll timekeeper, performs annual evaluations and is the human resources liaison for clarification on related policies and COVID regulations.

This position is also responsible for a broad range of activities which includes preservation and conservation assessment and treatment of general and rare special collection materials. In addition, the Supervisor provides support for library exhibits and loan requests, the digitization program by stabilizing collections prior to imaging, disaster planning and response, mass deacidification, commercial binding preparation and environmental monitoring of storage areas at the University Park and Commonwealth library locations.

This position also:

  • Serves as primary contact for internal library staff, external university and facilities personnel and vendors.
  • Participates in arranging tours, workshops, presentations, internships, job enrichment opportunities and community outreach.
  • Maintains systems and equipment such as freezers, industrial dehumidifiers, fume hoods and building security.
  • Monitors budgets and submits purchase requests for supplies and equipment for Preservation Services, the Cataloging and Acquisitions Departments, Commonwealth Campus locations, and the subject and branch libraries.
  • Handles all logistics of Conservation Centre outreach and donor events that includes the annual Minter Conservation Lectureship.
  • Represents the Preservation, Conservation & Digitization Department at the University Libraries’ Core SAT (Supervisor Action Team) committee and other committees as assigned.

The Preservation Services Supervisor is the front-facing representative of the Conservation Centre for the Preservation, Conservation & Digitization Department.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent knowledge, plus one year of work-related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient knowledge of the Libraries’ discovery catalog system and an understanding of the general flow of library materials from acquisitions, cataloging, lending services and the annex.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with vendors in the proactive treatments of library materials.
  • Supervisory experience and established ability to work in a team environment where consultation, flexibility, collaboration and cooperation are essential.
  • Must possess a strong commitment to diversity, equity, respect and inclusion.
  • A general proficiency in photography and conservation techniques and methods are preferred.
