Job Description

Purpose/Function (Job Summary)

This position will support the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division at NASA’s Johnson Space Center (JSC). This Division includes several human performance laboratories that conduct applied research to address health and performance risks that astronauts may face on the International Space Station (ISS) or on future human exploration missions. Technical disciplines include anthropometry, biomechanics, bone, cardiovascular, extravehicular activity (EVA) physiology, exercise physiology, neuroscience, and vision. Research is performed in a large, integrated laboratory facility at JSC. The purpose of this position is to ensure smooth and effective operations in the facility’s research area and machine shop. The incumbent will work closely with NASA and contractor management to oversee allocation of laboratory space for all disciplines, based on current mission objectives and authorized research. This position will establish and maintain a facility calendar/integrated schedule, a database of shared equipment, and facility policies and procedures. The position will oversee maintenance of equipment, provide/coordinate training to users, and ensure safe working conditions in both the shop and research areas. The employee will also establish a forum where facility users and lab representatives meet to resolve facility challenges and promote collaboration among the disciplines.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates high bay and shop activities and facilitates communication between SK/HHPC management, technical monitors, and laboratory leads.
  • Establishes monthly user meeting with facility users/laboratory representatives in the Performance Wing to discuss issues, promote collaboration and provide status to SK/HHPC management.
  • Works with SK/HHPC management to establish and enforce collaboration policy with expectations associated going across the organization.
  • Establishes and maintains shared high bay activities calendar.
  • Establishes and maintains list of equipment in high bay and completes equipment inventory annually.
  • Prepares for and coordinates Performance Wing tours and special events (including JSC Open House) with SK/HHPC management including opening and closing high bay partitions.
  • Communicates and enforces B21 policy and procedures to B21 and non- B21 high bay and shop users.
  • Coordinates training for technical and shop equipment and tools with end users and managers and maintains records.
  • Coordinates requests for high bay space with end users, technical monitors, and SK/HHPC management.
  • Completes annual review of high bay space including storage facilities (e.g., high bay cabinets and storage room) based on current and future funded studies and communicates with SK/HHPC management.
  • Coordinates requests for facility modifications with end users, SK/HHPC management, Center Ops, etc.
  • Coordinates large equipment deliveries to B21 Performance Wing with end users, vendors, and JSC Riggers and provides status to SK/HHPC management.
  • Establishes and maintains inventory of equipment in Temporary Storage with end users and management.
  • Responsible for completing hurricane preparedness efforts in high bay and associated areas.
  • Finalizes the B21 Performance Wing High Bay Shared Equipment and Spaces Policies and B21 Shop Policies and Procedures and presents to the BRESCB board for initial approval and annually.
  • Completes and maintains an updated high bay floor plan with equipment and provides annual updates to SK/HHPC management.
  • Participates in Test Readiness Reviews and safety reviews for testing that occurs in high bay.
  • Completes and documents monthly safety inspections for high bay, shop, temporary storage, loading dock, and common areas in Performance Wing.
  • Serves as one of the fire wardens in Performance Wing.
  • Ensures equipment in high bay is labeled in accordance with ISO regulations.
  • Maintains and updates Sharepoint site as required.
  • Assists with resolution of scheduling issues/conflicts between laboratories ensuring that all objectives are met.
  • Works with SK/HHPC management on equipment and tools maintenance/replacement plan/strategy for shop.
  • Ensures that high bay and shop areas are safe and clean and works with laboratory personnel to keep facilities clean.
  • Demonstrates a positive problem-solving attitude with an enthusiasm for working as part of an exceptional team.
  • Approaches tasks with flexibility and willingness to re-direct efforts in the event of changing priorities.

Education/Experience

REQUIRED:

  • The candidate must have a Bachelor's degree in a physiological science, biomedical engineering, or closely related field and at least 10 years of related experience
  • Experience conducting research in a human performance laboratory
  • Experience coordinating laboratory activities and/or overseeing a laboratory facility
  • Must be a US citizen or lawful permanent resident

DESIRED:

Knowledge of the human spaceflight program and how humans adapt/perform in microgravity and planetary environments

Skills/Training

REQUIRED:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; employee will be required to effectively communicate with laboratory users and management regarding facility policies and procedures, goals/expectations, scheduling, etc. Employee may also assist with giving facility tours
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work independently and as a team member; employee will be required to work and communicate with scientists, engineers, JSC facility personnel, and management
  • Highly motivated and able to prioritize tasks
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Demonstrated real-time problem solving skills
  • Standard PC and Microsoft Office skills, including ability to create and manage SharePoint sites
  • Capable of working with and maintaining laboratory/shop hardware and tools

  • Ability to move equipment and reconfigure facility partitions

DESIRED:

  • Proficient as a SharePoint 2016 administrator
