Acero Schools counselors realize that success is built on relationships - with students, families and colleagues. Our counselors will work with students, administrators, teachers, parents, community organizations, and other stakeholders to promote student success, and respond to identified student needs. Also, the High School Counselor will implement a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses college, career, and personal development for all students. In addition, the High School Counselor will be responsible for advising and/or planning with students and families as it relates to college and career goals.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES: Development and Management of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

  • Develop and maintain a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program based on the Developmental Counseling Model for Illinois Schools, current school achievement plan, and current individual school data.
  • Communicate goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to administrators, teachers, students, and parents.
  • Maintain current and appropriate counseling/college/career resources for students and families.
  • Is accountable for the implementation and management of the school counseling program.
  • Use data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs.
  • Assist teachers, parents/guardians, and other stakeholders in interpreting and understanding student data.
  • Participate in professional development activities to improve knowledge and skills.
  • Adhere to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the school counseling profession.

Delivery of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program

  • Implement the components of the comprehensive school approved counseling program.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate and prevention-oriented activities to meet student needs and school goals.

Individual Student Planning

  • Develop individual college, career and personal goals, and plan for caseload of students.
  • Collaborate and assist students and families with scholarship, college entrance, and financial aid applications.

Preventive and Responsive Services

  • Provide counseling, in consult and collaboration, with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and other educational/community resources to caseload students with identified concerns and needs.
  • Implement an effective referral and follow-up process for caseload students as needed.
  • Monitor caseload students’ academic performance, behavior, and attendance and facilitate appropriate interventions.
  • Accurately and appropriately use assessment procedures for determining and structuring individual and group counseling services.

Accountability

  • Measure and analyze data results of the comprehensive school counseling program activities and share results as appropriate with relevant stakeholders to help guide program direction and emphasis.

Additional responsibilities

  • Host family meetings to communicate the college going process, financial aid application, scholarship information, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS: QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Master’s degree in social work, counseling, or related field (required)
  • At least one year of teaching experience (preferred)
  • Experience working with children who have been educationally underserved
  • Be able to demonstrate the academic progress of students under your leadership and articulate the methods used to achieve those results
  • Bilingual - English/Spanish (preferred)
  • Possess valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or equivalent (required)
  • Possess valid Illinois School Counselor's endorsement or equivalent (required)
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States (required)

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The nature of the work requires an ability to operate standard business office equipment, collect, compile and prepare work documents, set-up and maintain work files, and an ability to communicate and exchange information. Physical demands include the ability to stand, bend, reach high and low, stoop, and walk around the classroom 60% of the day. In addition, candidates must be able to lift and/or push and pull 15 to 20 lbs. for short periods of time, and walk up and down stairs several times a day.
Majority of work is performed in a general school environment. Position requires availability for extended hours plus non-traditional hours required to perform job duties. Also requires participation and attendance at organization-sponsored events and meetings.
