Healthy Appalachia Institute Program Director

The Healthy Appalachia Institute Program Director will have operational oversight of the programs of the institute. This position will serve as subject matter expert in the field of public and population health, with a responsibility for community outreach, program development and management, grant writing, reporting and instructing one public health, undergraduate course per semester. In addition to administering programs, this director will support the work of employees including student interns and fellows as well as provide academic advising support for students seeking an education in public and population health.

The University of Virginia's College at Wise invites applications for a Program Director, Healthy Appalachia Institute (HAI). This position will be responsible for advancing the mission of HAI to improve the health, education, environment, and prosperity for residents of central Appalachia. In doing so, the Program Director will engage communities and organizations and address the social, economic and scientific issues that exist at the interface of health and Appalachian culture. This position requires a master's degree in Public Health (MPH or MSPH), experience in developing, managing and coordinating public health or health-related programs, and experience working with diverse constituencies. The Program Director must coordinate multiple projects and collaborate with diverse stakeholders including UVA Wise faculty, staff and students as well as colleagues from the University of Virginia and regional, state and federal partners. This position covers a large geographical region. Specific responsibilities include:

• Utilizing evidence-based practices, design and implement strategies for positively impacting public health or health-related outcomes in Southwest Virginia.
• Engage and maintain close working relationships with community, regional and state health professionals, organizations as well as community leaders.
• Engage resources of the University of Virginia and other public health organizations to assist with designing and implementing specific public health programs and activities.
• Design, implement and maintain a continuous improvement process for insuring the effectiveness of HAI programs and activities.
• Maintain a repository of regional project descriptions in which faculty and students may be engaged to assist with implementation.
• Increase the profile of HAI in Southwest Virginia, the Commonwealth of Virginia as well as other public health organizations in the broader region by designing and implementing a communication strategy to include marketing and promotional strategies.
• Manage the fiscal operations of HAI by developing the institute's budget, as well as tracking and reconciling program budgets.
• Design and maintain HAI program and outcome reports.
• Leverage grant funding; research and identify applicable grant opportunities; manage the grant application process and implement as appropriate.
• Teach one undergraduate public health course per semester and advise UVA Wise students pursuing a minor in public health.

A Master's in Public Health (MPH) is required or must be obtained by the first day of employment with HAI. The successful candidate must be proficient with Microsoft Office and statistical packages, competent internet usage, and the ability to use on-line health databases. At least three years' experience in a health-related setting is also required. This professional must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, as well as time management, project management, budgeting, relationship development, and technical skills. In addition, the director must have demonstrated ability to initiate and carry out complex projects and must have the ability to interact with all levels of organizations including community leaders, colleagues, stakeholders and citizens.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education: Master's degree in Public Health (MPH) required, or must be obtained by the first day of employment with HAI.

Experience: At least three years' experience in a health-related setting.

Knowledge, skills and abilities: Knowledge of evidence-based best practices to improve public health; knowledge/understanding of social determinants of health and impact on health policy; understanding and empathy for the challenges faced by communities that lack capacity in assets, resources, etc. to improve health; ability to analyze and use health data to develop programs; ability to actively promote and sustain partner and citizen engagement; ability to network and collaborate with diverse regional and statewide stakeholders across sectors; ability to implement and evaluate programs with an emphasis on measurable outcomes using data and best practices; ability to facilitate meetings and planning efforts, and develop and make presentations; ability to develop resource proposals and identify potential financial partners; a self-starter, good decision-making skills and ability to work with minimal supervision; ability to prioritize program activities and move multiple programs forward simultaneously; ability to develop strong relationships within the health field, including public health, health providers, and higher education faculty at UVA Wise, the University of Virginia, and other institutions; ability to work with consultants; ability to track and reconcile program budgets; can demonstrate discretion, integrity, sound judgement and political acumen; outstanding analytical, interpersonal, organizational and writing skills; ability to teach introductory public health courses or facilitate training programs in public health; forward-thinking, pro-active and dynamic; ability to supervise full and part time staff.
