Job Description
The Cleveland Orchestra is seeking a Graphic Designer, who is responsible for creating engaging and on-brand graphic design, layout and production of The Cleveland Orchestra’s acclaimed concert program books and its new lifestyle Spotlight magazine, both in print and digitally. These high-profile program books, magazines, and their digital counterparts provide engaging, content to Cleveland Orchestra audiences including those who attend performances at Severance Hall, Blossom Music Festival, Family Concerts, the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra, Holiday Festival, special presentations, and The Cleveland Orchestra in Miami, as well as content for domestic and international tours. They share the Orchestra’s stories and connect with these audiences in a compelling way, instilling a love of classical music and lifetime connection to The Cleveland Orchestra.

This position will shape the visual aspects of these publications, capturing and holding the attention of its readers and through clear, accurate, and absorbing content. This individual must be a collaborative team player who has a creative flair and a strong ability to translate words and ideas into high quality, compelling design, delivering projects on time and on budget. This position is well suited to individuals who have a strong sense of curiosity, an inquisitive approach to learning, enjoy graphic design, are skilled in technology, and have an analytical mind but can express themselves creatively.

Position responsibilities include the following:
  • Provide high quality graphic design for The Cleveland Orchestra’s signature program books, Spotlight magazine, season guide, as well as other projects as assigned for both print and digital environments. Ensure that the design is consistent with the Orchestra’s brand image, and maintains an appropriate identity within the Orchestra’s family of graphic and brand communication.
  • Plan design concepts by studying information and materials. Obtain approvals by submitting rough layouts, ensuring that design is consistent with institutional brand.
  • Create and manage production calendar and timelines for printed and digital products, delivering these time sensitive projects on deadline and on budget.
  • Provide illustration for publications or contract and manage
  • Manage print production, and coordinate with vendors.
  • Maintain technical knowledge by attending design workshops; reviewing professional publications; and participating in professional societies.
  • Coordinate approvals and proofing process of final layouts.
  • Create digital versions of publications and coordinate with digital team to distribute on various platforms to include mobile. (Program books are currently distributed digitally on the Stageview platform.)
  • Assist in coordinating program book materials and texts with domestic and international tour venues, including appropriate level of Cleveland Orchestra proofreading and sign-off.
  • Assist in ensuring permissions and copyright status for all material in the book and magazine.
The successful candidate will meet the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, communications, or related field with minimum 3-5 years’ experience working in graphic design, marketing, or communications.
  • Excellent computer skills, with proficiency in computer software for print layout (InDesign), photo editing and manipulation (PhotoShop), and art creation (Freehand, Illustrator) in a PC environment.
  • Ability to think creatively and strategically about communicating effectively with different audiences and developing communications products to implement those strategies.
  • Strong proofreading skills.
  • Knowledge of print and digital production, and experience in layout, proofreading, and deadline/assembly coordination.
  • Understanding of layout, type, and designed graphic communication.
  • Demonstrated ability in managing relationship with outside vendors.
  • Superior organizational skills, project and deadline management, flexibility, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, and handle simultaneous projects.
  • A passion for music and familiarity with Classical music is highly desired.
  • Demonstrated independent, mature judgment.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
