The George Hasslein Chair is a visiting faculty position in the College of Architecture and Environmental Design at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California. This opportunity recognizes preeminent practitioners or scholars whose presence in the College as active teachers will enrich the interdisciplinary environment for students and faculty across all of the college's majors. Selected candidates will emphasize student mentoring and engagement with practitioners, both on campus and through field trips.

This will be a full-time, one-quarter, nonrenewable appointment in Fall 2021 (09/9/2021-12/11/2021), Winter 2022 (01/03/2022-03/21/2022), or Spring 2022 (03/28/2022- 06/11/2022). A split appointment between two part-time collaborators who share the Visiting Faculty position may be considered. Co-teaching with Cal Poly faculty who share the Visiting Faculty's interests is possible.

The position entails a two-course teaching assignment to include one project-based studio or laboratory course that enrolls two or more majors within the college and one seminar or lecture course open to all majors, plus service to the university. Service will include presentation of the George Hasslein Public Lecture, guest speaking in classes and student clubs, participation in reviews of student work, and mentoring of students and faculty.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience. In accordance with university reimbursement guidelines the Visiting Faculty is provided with a fixed amount of support funds to offset the cost of documented housing, travel and instructional expenses. In addition, library privileges, office space, a part-time student instructional assistant and some administrative support will be provided.

The George Hasslein Visiting Faculty will be invited to engage with faculty and students in the following departments: Architectural Engineering, Architecture, City and Regional Planning, Construction Management or Landscape Architecture, but the position is open to applicants from other fields closely associated with the built environment.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated experience and commitment to student-centered learning and teaching, as well as the ability to collaboratively work in multidisciplinary settings is required. Demonstrated proficiency in written and oral use of the English language is required.

Candidates must demonstrate the ability to inspire, teach and mentor.

A distinguished record of interdisciplinary practice or scholarship related to one or more of the academic fields listed above is required.

A graduate degree in a field of study traditionally associated with the built environment is required, but may be waived for exceptional candidates who have received national or international recognition for their professional achievements.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

Visiting Faculty positions are open only to external applicants. Appointments are non-renewable. Appointees for the Visiting Faculty classification are not eligible to serve a probationary period, gain tenure, or earn an ongoing entitlement. The person holding this position is considered a 'mandated reporter' under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and is required to comply with the requirements set forth in CSU Executive Order 1083 as a condition of employment.
