Position Summary:

The Freight Broker is responsible for day-to-day freight and load management activities for the TGL Brokerage operation. Responsibilities include prospecting and development of carrier relationships, day-to-day negotiation of market competitive transportation pricing to support TGL’s customer shipping requirements and ensuring customer shipments are executed to TGL’s and the customer’s service level requirements. This role is pivotal for the successful ongoing growth of the TGL Brokerage business, and will work closely with TGL Sales, Account Management, and Carrier Relations in the overall development of our customer and carrier relationships with the overarching objective to help maximize the profitability of the brokerage operation.

  • Execute day-to-day management of brokerage freight moves, with primary responsibility for identifying and securing cost effective capacity with reputable carriers in support TGL customer shipment requirements
  • Proactively manage, develop, build, and secure successful shipping and carrier relationships
  • Source and negotiate with carrier base to move customer loads at lowest possible cost while maintaining all service level requirements
  • Follow through on each load transaction from beginning to end ensuring successful delivery of customer shipments, including resolution of any issues that may arise during shipment
  • Work closely with Account Managers to understand specific customer requirements and expectations, and work proactively with Account Managers and other TGL team members to ensure a consistent high-level of customer service
  • Actively monitor transportation market conditions, with emphasis on trends, events and other factors that may impact market pricing for TGL customer and our carrier partners
  • Monitor and report on carrier performance issues in support of TGL Carrier Relations
  • Track achievement towards individual financial goals related to freight revenue and freight gross margin
  • Monitor and aid in POD retrieval, tracking activation, and other duties as assigned

Required Education and Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED required
  • Bachelor’s degree in business management, logistics, supply chain, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • At least 2-3 years customer service or relevant experience is required
  • Strong system knowledge including SAP, Excel, Word, Access and PowerPoint, and Outlook, and the ability to learn and utilize transportation management software (TMS)

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

  • 1 year in a high-volume 3rd party logistics or Truckload Brokerage/Freight Operation preferred
  • Independent, self-starter, ability to handle a high volume of work is required
  • Negotiations skills: Demonstrated ability to negotiate and “broker” truckloads for maximum profit to company and necessary service to customer
  • Exceptional organization skills and must be able to multi-task and reprioritize tasks for self and team as necessary under pressure
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and negotiation abilities are key for this role
  • Ability to successfully work in a fast-paced work environment, make independent decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as laptop computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, fax machines and smartphones.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate (verbal/written), converse with, and exchange information with others. The employee is frequently required to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time; occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, converse with co-workers, and monitor interactions within the facility; may need to position oneself to move between tight or low spaces. The person in this position must operate a computer and other office machinery such as a copy machine, printer, calculator; pull/retrieve/file documents in a filing cabinet. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
