Job Description

Duties of this position:
The Fish & Wildlife Technician III assists with the day to day operation of the Rabbit Creek Shooting Park (RCSP) for +35,000 annual public users. Duties include:
  • Operating and maintaining the handgun, rifle, and archery ranges.
  • Providing safety orientations for each user, which includes both verbal orientation and demonstration of safety rules.
  • Answering public inquiries regarding range procedures, firearm safety classes and activities, and range safety.
  • Completing financial transactions using cash registers, credit card machines, and balance sheets.
  • Periodic grounds maintenance using equipment including a riding lawn mower, forklift, and UTVs.

The FWTIII is part of the Hunter Information & Training (HIT) Program team that works with an array of dedicated volunteers and private/agency firearms instructors to promote safe and enjoyable hunting and shooting experiences for the general public (all ages).

Your working environment:
This position is based at the Rabbit Creek Shooting Park, located in south Anchorage adjacent to the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. The incumbent will be in contact daily with the public, volunteers, and ADF&G staff. The position works both indoors and outdoors daily. This is an 11-month position, with a normal shift of 10:00 am – 6:00 pm on Wednesday –Sunday, working from January 1 to November 30 of each year.

Who we are looking for:
  • Strong understanding of firearms and ammunition, firearms safety, firearms maintenance, and hunting practices and culture.
  • Basic knowledge of cash registers, financial transactions, computers, and common business software.
  • Experience working in a customer-service environment with strong interpersonal and customer-relations skills.
  • Experience working as part of a team, with the ability to work independently at times with minimum supervision.
  • Basic construction, mechanical, and electronic abilities and basic knowledge of operating equipment including UTV’s, plow trucks, riding lawn mowers, and forklifts.

Special Notice:
  • This position requires the use or possession of a firearm or ammunition.
  • A valid driver's license is required.
  • This is a seasonal 11-month/year position.
  • The normal shift is Wednesday-Sunday from 10:00am-6:00pm when the facility is open for public use.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation; and six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. This experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 with the State of Alaska.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection, or as a commercial fisherman, guide, trapper or subsistence hunter or fisherman.

Substitutions: An additional six months of work experience involving fish or wildlife, or outdoor manual labor or in a laboratory may substitute for high school graduation. Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management or habitat protection.

Special Requirements: Work may involve exposure to animals, insects and inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology and zoology.
