REPORTS TO: Electrical Supervisor

SUPERVISES: Trades Assistants, Trainees and Apprentices

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Installs and maintains Cat5/6, Fiber Optic network cabling and network cabling infrastructure to meet military shipboard requirements.
• Performs test on fiber optic cables.
• Works from detailed Electrical Drawings, Mechanical Drawings and Technical Work Documents.
• Terminates Fiber Optic cabling, Military/Avoinics high density plugs and a wide range of RF cables to include Coax and Heliax.
• Actively plans and implements construction improvements.
• Ensures correct construction procedures are adhered to in compliance with Austal standards.
• Assists in the provision of on the job training in conjunction with Supervisors.
• Keeps impeccable time keeping and absentee records.
• Works with a sense of urgency and efficiency to meet production schedules.
• Plans and sets time frames on jobs with accuracy
• Works with minimal supervision and is responsible for assuring the quality of own work.
• Provides constructive feedback to his or her Supervisor/Foreman/Manager.
• Performs other shipboard electrical work as needed.
• Maintains safe work practices and adheres to safety policies and procedures.
• Complies with Austal’s employee handbook general guidelines, company procedures and policies.

QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE / EXPERIENCE:
Required:

• Three (3) years of experience terminating Fiber Optic cabling.
• Demonstrated competency in marine electrical installation.
• Ability to demonstrate the termination of Fiber Optic cabling to include SC, ST, LC and Terminus.
• Ability to demonstrate the termination of Military/Avionics high density circular plugs.
• Ability to demonstrate the termination of a wide range of RF cables to include Coax and Heliax.
• Ability to demonstrate a high level of competency in the use of all trade related power tools, testing equipment and specialized connector and fiber optic tools.
• Familiar with testing fiber optic cables
• Sound knowledge in the installation of cabling systems to meet marine class Society, Navy and Coast Guard regulations.
• Ability to interpret electrical schematics and documentation.

Preferred:

• Formal training in accordance with Naval Standard Item 009-73.
• Formal training in accordance with MIL-STD-2003 5A.
• Formal Electrical training through an apprenticeship or comparable program.
• Shipbuilding experience.
• High School Diploma/GED equivalent required or two years maritime experience.

TOOLS:

• Trade related power tools.
• Testing equipment.
• Specialized connector and fiber optic tooling.
• Employee will supply own trade tools for “A” class electrical duties.

DIRECTION EXERCISED: In conjunction with the Supervisor shall assist in training, assistants and Apprentices on own crew.

DISCRETION EXERCISED: Adheres to schedule and meets goals as set by Supervisor while maintaining productive output.

LIAISES WITH: Liaise with other crafts as required by Supervisor.

ADDITIONAL GUIDELINES:

• High School Diploma/GED or comparable trade experience with comparable trade experience defined as five (5) or more years of experience working in the applicable trade, two (2) years of experience in shipbuilding, or, education in the trade comparable to apprenticeship.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Must be able to tour all vessels and work sites.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to manipulate, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, climb and balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit.
Specific physical requirements include the following:

• Must have the ability to bend, squat, stoop, crawl, and kneel.
• Perform prolonged standing.
• Ability to turn head from side to side and about the vertical axis.
• Ability to turn body at the waist from side to side and about the vertical axis.
• Lift/push/pull 50lbs to 75lbs on an occasional basis.
• Lift/push/pull up to 20lbs on a frequent basis.
• Must have the ability to climb in a safe manner (climbing as a minimum includes stairs, scaffolding, ladders, and ramps).
• Ability to work at heights above 12’ while working from ladders, scaffolding and/or man lifts.
• Able to work at a variety of levels (ex. waist, eye, overhead).
• Demonstrate the ability to safely and appropriately use required tools and equipment.
• Demonstrate good balance while working on uneven surfaces and maneuvering obstacles.
• Possess sufficient handgrip and coordination to carry and operate tools and equipment.
• Ability to utilize personal protective equipment (hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toes shoes, goggles, respirator, safety harness, safety line, flotation gear, etc.) safely per OSHA standards.
• Ability to withstand cold and hot temperatures.
• Ability to enter 18” x 36” openings and work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
• Able to respond to verbal and audible sounds/commands.
• Able to utilize adequate visual skills.
• Ability to fully extend the arm while reaching overhead, reaching out, reaching to the side and reaching down.
• Ability to perceive attributes of an object/material such as size, shape, temperature and texture by means of receptors in the hands and fingers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to humid conditions, bright flashing lights, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud, + 90 dB.
