Job Description
Who we are

The average public high school student in the US receives just 38 minutes of college guidance across 4 years. Here at CollegeVine, we're working to close the guidance gap by providing free, personalized college guidance to all students. We've helped thousands of students get into college since 2013, and in 2019 pivoted to an all-digital guidance offering to expand our impact to millions. Transitioning from one-on-one guidance to a 100% software offering is a big challenge, but we've been able to meet it thanks to our unique culture.

You'll be joining a distributed, talented team that's deeply invested in the problems we're trying to solve. We live all around the world, working from our homes, coffee shops, and even a boat! We recruit and hire from varied backgrounds based on our belief that our team's diversity allows us to create better solutions for families.

About the Role

As an Executive Producer, you will be responsible for creating engaging video content that guides millions of families through the college admissions process.

Traditionally, the best advising on the college process has only been accessible to those with the means to afford a private school counselor or an expensive college consultant. However, through your leadership, we'll level the playing field and ensure that every single family has access to the same resources — through free, high-quality video content.

Your objective will be to transform and grow our Youtube following to millions of fans, which means your work will have real impact and scale. You'll be given the creative and strategic freedom to approach building out our video content in whatever way you think will best achieve our growth goals. You'll leverage best practices to ensure the Youtube algorithm favors our content and grows our audience.

Additionally, you'll be responsible for our livestream video content. Our built-in livestream platform helps students get access to live, interactive advising from the world's top admissions experts — completely for free. You'll have ownership over how we build out this program to serve hundreds of thousands.

While you are expected to roll up your sleeves and create content yourself, we are looking for someone who ultimately can hire and manage a world-class team of on-screen talent, editors, and writers.

Responsibilities
  • Grow CollegeVine's Youtube channel to millions of viewers
  • Articulate a compelling vision, strategy, and roadmap for our video content
  • Create amazing video content that engages and educates students on topics related to the college process
  • Oversee the formation of a video content team, complete with on-screen talent, editors, and writers
  • Own operating metrics, such as CollegeVine website visits, new user registrations, and budget
  • Develop and execute a strategy for CollegeVine's livestream video content
  • Analyze user behavior data to improve video content
  • Work effectively with our product team to leverage video content in other parts of the CollegeVine experience
Who we're looking for

You know you're right for this position if:

  • You seek ownership beyond your own work, and look to the product and company as a whole.
  • You are a self-starter and internally motivated, with a strong desire to be part of a successful team that shares your high standards.
  • You care about learning and do not shy away from quickly diving into topics you are not immediately familiar with
  • You understand what it means to be entrepreneurial and resourceful. Perhaps you've launched your own side-project, worked at a startup, or helped a scrappy business grow quickly
Qualifications

In addition to your awesome attitude and values, we're looking for someone with the following skills:

  • Expertise and track record of creating high quality video content
  • Knowledge of Youtube growth techniques, e.g. algorithm factors, SEO
  • Comfort with script writing, being on camera, and editing
  • Ability to recognize and curate amazing content, i.e. you have an excellent "taste" when it comes to video and can quickly spot when something is good or bad
  • Experience managing and motivating a team of on-screen talent and editors
  • Desire to regularly source user feedback to continuously improve our content

It's an added bonus if you have:

  • Experience working with interactive streaming, e.g. Twitch.tv, Youtube Live, Facebook Live
  • Analyzed user data to further inform your creative efforts
  • Worked remotely before
  • Gone through the US college admissions process, or can articulate how it works
What to Expect

Your first day

You'll meet with our Head of Product and get a rundown of company strategy, goals, and initiatives. You'll meet the folks you're likely to work with regularly, like our Director of Marketing. You'll also meet the larger company via Slack.

Your first week

You'll be given a crash course in how college admissions works. You'll have conversations with CollegeVine's founders and meet folks from every team. You'll start to familiarize yourself with CollegeVine's existing product and content offerings across Youtube and livestreams.

Your first month

You're meeting regularly with our users to better understand their needs. As you finish familiarizing yourself with the existing landscape, you'll work with the Head of Product to develop your own ideas for content, ensuring they fit into the larger product strategy. By this point, you should have at least one video and livestream created. You'll also have met everyone at CollegeVine.

Three months in

By now you've developed a better idea for what works well with our audience. You're producing awesome videos and livestreams on a predictable cadence. You're comfortable setting some audacious growth goals. You're starting to feel like you have more ideas than time, so you start to bring on new team members to help you realize your vision. You're feeling productive, even if you're still learning about college admissions.

Six months in

A lot can happen in six months. During your first six months, you've learned a ton of information about admissions and are starting to actively participate in user interviews. Your videos are gaining traction and you're even thinking about redoing your initial goals because you've realized you're going to blow past them. Videos and livestreams are coming out rapidly, and they're amazing. Thanks to your efforts, we can credibly say that one of our core competencies is in producing world-class video content.

Benefits

We offer a competitive salary and a full suite of benefits, some of them unconventional, but awesome for the right person:

  • Medical, dental, vision insurance, and a 401k.
  • Flexible workday with a 4-hour core centered on EST - plan the rest of your workday as you wish, just give us the majority of your most creative hours.
  • Goal-based environment (as opposed to grind-based or decree-based environment; work smarter, not harder; intelligently, not mindlessly). We collaborate on setting goals, but you set your own process for accomplishing those goals. You will be entrusted with a lot of responsibility and you might even experience fulfillment and self-actualization as a result.
  • Join a company culture that celebrates mindfulness and takes the quality of your attention seriously.

Remember: We’re a startup. You’re an early employee. We face challenges. Your ideas matter. You will make a difference.
