Job Description

This position is eligible for a $5,000 hiring incentive.

This position oversees the HAI Surveillance and Stewardship Program and is responsible for the overall management and supervision of the program and assigned personnel. As a Management Senior Scientist/Epidemiologist, performs supervisory and advanced professional analytical work in surveillance, detection, and prevention of diseases and injuries. Oversees and conducts advanced-level professional epidemiologic work. Supervises and directs the work activities of subordinate staff involved in epidemiological investigations. Develops disease identification, surveillance, and control systems; maintains ongoing disease reporting systems; provides technical advice and assistance to local and tribal health departments, healthcare partners, and the public. Reviews and conducts literature reviews and data analyses. Develops and evaluates methods of training for healthcare providers and staff. Reviews work products or achievements of subordinate workers; evaluates work and formulates plans for improvements. Formulates policies and procedures. Develops and provides scientific and clinical advice and technical assistance to communities and outside partners with respect to surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation. Participates in after-hours activities, including partner meetings, investigations, outbreaks, and other emergency responses and evaluation activities. Participates in writing grants and other funding proposals. Conducts oral presentations to diverse audiences. Employees will be expected to make independent decisions and judgments based on their professional education, programmatic experience, and training; this position maintains and shares information and data of a very confidential nature.

Job Duties:
  • Oversees, manages, and supervises the work of epidemiologists and associated staff conducting health surveillance and epidemiologic investigations. Plans assigns, schedules, prioritizes, directs, and coordinates the work of assigned epidemiologists and other staff.
  • Plans, directs, oversees, and manages epidemiologic studies and/or urgent outbreak investigations. Leads the development and conduct of epidemiologic studies for program planning.
  • Develops and evaluates training methods for healthcare providers and staff in collaboration with Arizona's HAI Advisory Committee and subcommittees.
  • Develops and provides scientific advice and technical assistance to communities and outside partners based on surveillance and other epidemiologic data and evaluation.
  • Writes, administers, and monitors grants and grant budgets and provides updates on grant deliverables.
  • Participates in after-hours activities, including partner meetings, investigation, outbreak, and emergency response as needed.

  • Research methods, procedures, and techniques used in identifying and evaluating disease characteristics.
  • Contemporary medical methods and practices are used to control various diseases.

  • Recommend evidence-based interventions and control measures in response to epidemiologic findings.

Selective Preference(s):

Masters of Public Health and two years of professional experience or Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, health education, biostatistics, or a related field and three years of experience in applied public health epidemiology. The ideal candidate will have experience working with the different levels of the US health care system and public health system.
