Job Description

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) focuses on designing, building, launching, and maintaining America’s intelligence satellites. Currently, the NRO Cadre is looking for aspiring professionals for our Developmental Program (GG-9 to
GG-13) to support our Security Career Field. Developmental employees will receive training and guidance to prepare them to support the full performance level duties listed below.

Development employees will receive the following opportunities:

  • Learn to conduct pre-polygraph examinations and analyze data collected to determine the results of the polygraph examinations. Learn how developing and/or adapt polygraph techniques to the situation and preparing accurate, concise, logical and objective reports of investigations.
  • Analyze, identify and administer polygraph examinations by selecting the appropriate testing techniques on the basis of a thorough review and analysis of all available documentation.
  • Conduct pretest interviews of individuals to be examined to determine their willingness to submit to the examination.
  • Evaluate suitability for testing and making final determinations on whether or not to conduct the examination.

Full Performance GG-13, Polygraph Examiner (0080) duties:

  • Functions as a certified polygraph examiner, conducting polygraph examinations ranging from the apparently innocuous to more complex, highly sensitive security issues.
  • Ensure polygraph examinations strictly comply with legal and regulatory requirements, and meet the security requirements for the NRO.
  • Position conducts examinations of high-profile examinees, and/or as necessitated specialized tests following repetitively unresolved examinations.
  • Coordinates with other polygraph examiners and supervisors for guidance as needed.
  • Reviews available supporting documents to assess best course of action for polygraph testing when discrepancies occur.
  • Participates in special projects and initiatives, and performs special assignments.
  • Provides technical advice to the Supervisor or peers on topics ranging from proper testing formats, test questions, test data analysis or interview approaches.
  • Protects classified materials through use of sound security practices for ensuring the safeguarding of classified information.
  • Applies DoD Directive 5210.48; DODI 5210.91, ODNI policy and NRO Directives relating to polygraph and personnel security.

You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply. This position requires that you obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance. You will also be subject to pre-employment and periodic drug testing and a polygraph examination.

GG-09 - $60,129 - $78,167
GG-11 - $72,750 - $94,581
GG-13 - $103,690 - $141,710

GG-9: A Master’s degree in a related occupation is qualifying for this level

These positions are a Defense Civilian Intelligence Personnel System (DCIPS) position in the Excepted Service under 10 USC 1601.

Applicants must have directly applicable experience that demonstrates the possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for immediate success in the position. Qualifying experience may have been acquired in any public or private sector job, but will clearly demonstrate past experience in the application of the particular competencies/knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such experience is typically or directly related to the work of the position to be filled. Experience must be reflected in your resume.

Once certified, the candidate must meet the minimum standards for DoD Certification continuation as a Polygraph Examiner.

This position has a Basic Requirement for the Security Specialist (Polygraph): All polygraph examiner candidates must graduate from the National Center for Credibility Assessment (NCCA) Psychophysiological Detection of Deception (PDD) training program. Admission to the NCCA PDD training program requires: A bachelor's degree from an accredited educational institution authorized to grant baccalaureate degrees.

  • NOTE: Admission to the NCCA PDD training program requires:
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • At least 25 years of age
  • Earned baccalaureate degree from a four-year college or university accredited by the U.S. Department of Education (transcripts must be provided)
  • At least two years investigative experience
  • Successful completion of a Psychophysiological Detection of Deception (PDD) examination.

Hiring Incentives

Trial Period

All new DCIPS employees will be required to serve a 2-year trial period.
