Job Description
Position Summary

Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified equity-minded applicants for a full-time, tenure track position in Engineering. The successful candidates will demonstrate exceptional classroom skills, enthusiasm for the subject matter, an inclusive and equity driven approach to teaching and learning, and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. This position will be expected to oversee the Engineering program, provide leadership in the growth and development of the program, and establish a learning environment to enhance the study of engineering. This will include course and curriculum development, collaborating with other science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and working with transfer institutions to increase enrollments in the program. Faculty at SVC respect and work effectively with diverse students, colleagues, staff and others in a campus climate that promotes innovative and equity-minded teaching, a diverse learning environment, and a strong focus on improving student success rates and addressing systemic inequities in access and achievement for all students.

SVC Engineering faculty teach an equivalent of 15 credits per quarter (3 classes) and participate in College service. This position is expected to begin in Fall Quarter, September 2022.

This position is based primarily at the Mount Vernon Campus; however, instructors may be called upon to teach at the Whidbey Island Campus located in Oak Harbor. Future expansion of this program is expected at the Whidbey Island Campus.

This position is eligible for an additional High-Demand salary enhancement stipend beyond the initial faculty salary placement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide classroom and/or online instruction in Engineering and other closely related disciplines;
  • Provide leadership in developing the Engineering program, developing innovative programming, curricula, and pedagogy that incorporate program and general education learning outcomes;
  • Conduct ongoing development, assessment, and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative and inclusive pedagogy and advances in the field of Engineering;
  • Work collaboratively with SVC faculty from other STEM fields to develop appropriate curriculum for the Engineering program that reflects diversity of student experience, including underrepresented and underserved students;
  • Create a positive learning environment for students using diverse teaching methods to support and enhance student success;
  • Collaborate with faculty from other disciplines to develop and offer integrative learning experiences;
  • Develop, monitor, and assess student learning outcomes;
  • Advise and mentor students, including those from underrepresented and underserved groups;
  • Collaborate with other disciplines and transfer institutions to increase enrollment and support student retention in the program with a focus on ameliorating equity gaps;
  • Assist in developing, assessing, and analyzing program outcomes for the purpose of program improvement and enhanced student learning;
  • Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
  • Engage in scholarly activities that complement and inform teaching;
  • Mentor and assist adjunct faculty teaching Engineering or similar disciplines;
  • Participate in division, department and other college activities, including college governance;
  • Fulfill full-time faculty responsibilities in accordance with the negotiated agreement and Skagit Valley College policies;
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.

  • Engage students through innovative instructional approaches including learning communities, service learning projects, and contextualized learning;

  • Build and maintain a Engineering program that meets the needs of the college’s students and the community;

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree, equivalent education or higher, in Engineering or closely related field;
  • Have, or ability to obtain a Master's degree in Engineering or closely related field by June 2022;
  • One (1) year of teaching experience, which may include previous community college, university, K-12, graduate school, teaching assistant, and/or substitute teaching.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in curriculum development and program supervision, including an understanding of community college transfer requirements.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of professional experience in the engineering field.
  • Experience with CAD or other design software.

Salary, Benefits, Conditions of Employment, Application Procedure

Salary and Benefits:

  • Initial annual salary placement ranges from $60,000 to $80,000, plus an additional $20,000, paid as a stipend, for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement. The High-Demand salary enhancement stipend is contingent upon the continuation of funding.
  • A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
  • This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
  • This is a union represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Salary, retirement, medical and insurance benefits are provided in accordance with state regulations and may be subject to change in accordance with legislative mandates and collective bargaining agreements.
