JOB DESCRIPTION: Position Title: Technician 3-4, Vehicle Test Reports To: Manager, Engineering Date Last Revised: June 7, 2022
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for performing vehicle tests, vehicle maintenance on test equipment including heavy trucks, and supporting data acquisition testing. In addition to performing test assignments, the successful candidate will be responsible for analyzing results, developing conclusions based on results and making recommendations. Independently evaluates problems or opportunities, identifies solutions and applies standard engineering analysis tools to evaluate and select solutions.
Essential Functions:
  • Perform vehicle testing to develop and validate electrical control systems including ESP, ABS, Trailer and Driver assistance systems
  • Travel to test sites as necessary to support vehicle testing at TRC in E Liberty, Oh and KRC in Houghton, Mi. Willing to travel >50% with multiple extended stays of 10 days or more in the Winter
  • Perform basic truck and trailer maintenance and coordinate with local service shops for vehicle preventative maintenance
  • Train others to obtain CDLs (truck driver training)
  • Manage garage and vehicles for 5S cleanliness, user coordination and parts stock
  • Be an expert user of data acquisition and diagnostic tools on test vehicles
  • Write technical reports to document test results and conclusions.
  • Maintain test request and report database using TeamCenter.
  • Develop and maintain work instructions and test procedures using TeamCenter.
  • Perform vehicle Instrumentations and electronic systems retrofits onto test and customer vehicles
  • Pursue improved processes, methods and equipment for cost, quality and delivery

Knowledge:
  • Knowledge base of most tasks performed in the lab environment and requires limited guidance from engineering resources.
  • Experience with diagnostic software and automotive diagnostic interfaces are a plus.
  • Experience with soldering for printed circuit boards is a plus.
  • Experience with performing basic electronics’ troubleshooting using industry standard tools.
  • Good working knowledge of environmental test standards for the automotive industry.
  • Experience with intermediate machining as required to build custom test fixtures is a plus.

Experience:
  • 5+ years of experience on heavy vehicle maintenance
  • Experience with lab and vehicle test instrumentation and data acquisition systems
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude such as SAE certification or experience with hands-on vehicle maintenance, motorsports or similar. Heavy duty truck or Automotive industry experience required
  • Brake component and systems knowledge is a plus.

Skills:
  • Strong technical aptitude; comfortable and skilled at working in automotive/truck service environment.
  • Excellent organization skills with a capability to prioritize time and resources to achieve the completion of tasks / goals.
  • Familiar in the use of data acquisition systems and the ability to assimilate data quickly
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills and a positive/proactive work ethic.
  • Must possess a strong set of interpersonal skills to ensure success in a cross-functional, team environment developing solutions through collaboration.

Education:
  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology is desirable. With the Associate degree in Engineering Technology seven years’ experience is required. Without Associate degree then high school degree and nine years of related technical experience is required.
  • Greenbelt certification is a plus

Travel:
  • Expected travel up to 25%. Will be heavier during testing season (winter).
