Job Description

SUMMARY:

Transport and administer care to all patients as authorized and directed by the laws, rules and regulations of the State of Illinois, the US Department of Transportation and the Chicago North Emergency Medical Services Systems and Loyola Emergency Medical Services System.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Includes the following…(although other duties may be assigned by designated company representatives)

Obtain accurate report and determine nature and extent of the illness or injury. Treat and transport or make appropriate referral by following current system protocols.

Administers appropriate treatment to the patient on arrival at the scene and enroute to the receiving destination.

Receive report prior to transporting the patient from appropriate on scene medical personnel (when applicable) collaborates with on scene medical personnel to provide appropriate medical care. When primary response unit, the EMT-B will conduct a primary and secondary patient exam to illicit appropriate patient information.

During Transport of patient to a hospital, report must be relayed by MERCI radio or cellular telephone to alert receiving facility of patient condition, past medical history, current vital signs, personal physician, treatment and effect of treatment on patient.

On arrival to receiving destination, whether a hospital, skilled nursing facility or other medical complex, a report must be provided to personnel assuming care of the patient. All pertinent information must be relayed so that continuity of care is maintained. If the receiving destination is a private residence, ensure the patient’s safety and provide any documents, medication and personal effects entrusted to you for transport.

Maintains vehicles and equipment in a manner allowing for immediate transport if necessary, following the completion of each call. Vehicles will be kept clean, neat and orderly. Stretchers must be clean at all times. Linen will be changed following each patient transport. All stretchers must contain a pillow, blanket and two sets of linen.

Must perform all duties associated with the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic licensure scope of practice according to system protocols. Must be proficient in the skills and procedures according to the level of licensure and system medical orders.

Must complete all System and State of Illinois required education and training in order to maintain licensure.

Must be able to drive an ambulance or any company vehicles assigned.

Must be able to provide world-class customer service to all patients, customer accounts and citizens. Must represent MedEx Ambulance Service in a positive manner during each and every contact.


QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

To perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to complete each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.


EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Graduate of High School or General Equivalency Diploma

Completion of EMT-Basic Training Program


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES and REGISTRATIONS

Current Illinois Emergency Medical Technician-Basic Licensure

Valid Illinois Driver’s License


LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to successfully complete routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or associates of organization. Ability to effectively communicate with other health care professionals.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Ability to drive ambulance and other company vehicles (Must possess acceptable driving record and be insurable under company insurance coverage.)

Familiar with Medical Terminology.

Ability to work well in a team-based environment.

Accurately discerning street names through map reading and correctly distinguishing house numbers or business addresses are essential to task completion in the most expedient manner.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an associate to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

While performing the duties of this position, the associate is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talk or hear. The associate is often required to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and occasionally to taste or smell.

The associate must regularly lift and/or move more than 125 pounds. The patients are lifted to the stretcher occasionally carried over rough terrain on the stretcher, lifted to the ambulance, pulled out of the ambulance, and lifted to the bed they are to be left on when the personnel leave. Frequent lifting and moving up and down stairs with greater than 125 pounds. This is usually accomplished by two individuals. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an associate encounters while performing the essential functions of the position. While performing the duties of this position, the associate regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The associate occasionally works in precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation exposure. The associate is subjected to all weather conditions. There is also potential risk of acquiring an infectious disease that may or may not have a cure. Employees are also exposed to potential hazardous and dangerous situation such as gun violence and physical violence against them.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
