Job Description

School Social Worker

Purpose Statement:
The School Social Worker position provides assessments to obtain social and developmental histories through interviews with students, families, school personnel and appropriate community agencies; provides counseling and crisis intervention services.

Essential Functions*:

  • Act as an advocate on behalf of the student to insure that educational, legal, community and family needs are met.
  • Provide assessments to obtain social and developmental histories through interviews with students, families, school personnel and appropriate community agencies.
  • Provide counseling to individuals, groups, and families to solve problems, facilitate the educational process, and in the event of a truancy issue, provide appropriate pre- filing interventions for students and families to change attendance problems.
  • Provide crisis intervention services to students and families using conflict resolution, problem solving techniques and referrals to appropriate community agencies.
  • Organize and facilitate parent meetings designed to increase the understanding of the adolescent student.
  • Consult with teachers and other school personnel to provide information, insight and strategies to promote the growth and development of adolescent students.
  • Meets appropriate deadline(s) related to responsibilities.
  • Maintains accurate, comprehensive, and current records in compliance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Expedites referrals to other agencies and specialists when appropriate.
  • Participates in student assistance teams and IEP team meetings by sharing expertise in social emotional development, behavioral management, and instructional programming.
  • Assists parents in recognizing the learning characteristics and special needs of their child, and helps parents deal realistically with those characteristics and needs.
  • Collaborates with District human service staff such as counselors, social workers, and health staff.
  • Consults with private and public practitioners regarding student’s academic and social progress.
  • Expedites referrals to other agencies and specialists, when appropriate.
  • Attends various trainings and/or conferences to update skills as requested by

Director of Special Education.

  • Implements special assignments and other duties as assigned as requested by Director of Special Education.
  • Maintains accurate, comprehensive, and current records in compliance with District, state, and federal guidelines.
  • Perform casework service with individual students and families to assist in the amelioration of personal, social, or emotional problems related to their educational, social, or emotional progress.
  • Provide input as part of staff planning process in dealing with the at-risk child and family.
  • Assist in the formation of student groups and conduct group sessions in cooperation with staff in heighten learning potential and help students grow emotionally, academically and socially.
  • Develop and maintain a community network system with community family agencies and provide families with information on resources and services available to them.
  • Attend or participate in all required staff meetings and other activities deemed necessary by the District and/or building principal, in order to accomplish the objectives of the position and for professional development.
  • Participate in site-based decision-making processes.

Other Functions:

  • Provide an enthusiastic and positive learning climate that promotes appropriate behavior and successful learning and progress.
  • Interact positively with students, colleagues, parents, and patrons of the school district.
  • Promote appreciation for cultural and racial diversity among students.
  • Work under the direction of a building team leader in an effort to facilitate coordination of the district special education program.

Working Environment:
While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to focus on a computer screen for two or more hours at a time; exercise precise control of fingers and hand movements; exper ience demands from a dive rsity of other s, including, students, parents, community and staff resulting in constant change; dealing with distraught or difficult individuals; working with challenging students. The employee frequently operates a motor vehicle on public roads.

Experience/Knowledge/Skills:

  • Experience as a Social Worker in a school setting preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with a range of ages and disability conditions.
  • Knowledge in social skills training and behavior management.
  • Extensive knowledge of federal, state and school district rules, regulations, and codes regarding Special Education.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Evidence of success in functioning cooperatively and productively as a team member with demonstrated skill in communication, problem solving, and collaborative decision-making.
  • Capability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with students, staff, parents, and the community
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within time constraints and meet deadlines in an, often, stressful environment.
  • Capacity to use technology, e.g. e-mail, computer software for assessment scoring, spreadsheets and report writing.
  • Significant multicultural experience and expertise preferred.
  • Bilingual candidate preferred.

Education/Certification:

  • Washington State ESA Certificate as a Social Worker
  • State Social Worker licensure
  • Master’s Degree required
  • Successfully complete Washington State Patrol background check. Employee is responsible for cost of background check.
