We're seeking a news junkie. A detail-oriented leader who thrives on deadlines. Someone who can lead a team of writers and editors as they take in an entire day worth of complex, fast-changing, and sometimes confusing health care news—and transform it into clear, concise, and meaningful coverage.

We know; we're seeking someone special. But we have high standards at Advisory Board's News Division, which publishes our flagship Daily Briefing newsletter and our industry-leading blog. Our publications are must-reads at thousands of health care organizations across the nation. According to one hospital executive who missed a few issues, "I feel like I'm going through caffeine withdrawal not being able to see the Daily Briefing every day."

The News Division's small but dynamic team typically works a 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. ET shift. Until noon, staff members are on a very tight deadline while creating the day’s publications; afternoons are less hectic.

The editor-in-chief leads a team of six writers and editors, oversees the daily news production process, makes crucial editorial judgments about what to cover (and how to cover it), and serves as the "final set of eyes" on the News Division's work before it's published.

This opportunity is based in Washington, D.C. Remote candidates will also be considered.

You may enjoy the flexibility to telecommute* from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges.

Daily Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the frontline editors who manage the Daily Briefing and Advisory Board's blog, ensuring that all publications hit their deadlines and meet high standards for quality
  • Exercises deep knowledge of the health care industry and exceptional editorial judgment to guide news coverage decisions
  • Copyedits news and feature stories, providing final sign-off before publication, including on complex, technical, or sensitive news stories
  • Manages and supports the work of five direct reports, including writers, editors, and a process manager
  • Provides high-level oversight of the proofing and fact-checking process, publication of content to the website, and delivery of daily e-mail, requiring expertise in AP style and HTML

Ongoing Responsibilities:

  • Leads ongoing development and training of News Division staff members
  • Collaborate with other Advisory Board departments, including our research and member services teams, to drive stories about the firm's research
  • Actively participate in web data analysis to measure the success of Daily Briefing and other Advisory Board content, and set editorial strategy in response to analytics
  • Monitor and build readership and increase reader value through creative coverage and testing new ideas
  • Respond to member inquiries and requests related to Daily Briefing coverage
  • Monitor health care trends to ensure news coverage is as comprehensive as possible
  • Maintain expertise in health care news and Advisory Board research

You’ll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of relevant work experience
  • 3+ years of experience conducting health care research or writing/editing for publication
  • Demonstrated ability to create, adapt, and unify content specifically for the web

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in journalism or communications, or a field related to health care
  • 2+ years of experience managing staff
  • Experience leading an online publication, including familiarity with content management systems, mass email software, web analytics, and UX testing
  • Experience in writing/editing content relates to health news or health policy
  • Experience building relationships while negotiating, prioritizing, and managing concurrent projects
  • Full COVID-19 vaccination is an essential requirement of this role. UnitedHealth Group will adhere to all federal, state and local regulations as well as all client requirements and will obtain necessary proof of vaccination prior to employment to ensure compliance
