Job Description

Position Summary

Provides leadership for patient care area. Plans and directs daily operations of specified areas to coordinate corporate, hospital and unit goals. Director manages two departments or more.

8. Business/Administrative Responsibilities:

  • To achieve quality patient outcomes, directs the hiring, counseling and scheduling of associates within specified areas, as evidenced by:
  • Sets goals, objectives and environment to achieve alignment of unit to hospital and corporation. interviews applicants and selects quality personnel who share similar values and philosophy as ProMedica.
  • Coordinates departmental orientation for all newly appointed associates to ensure a clear understanding of position responsibilities, departmental/unit policies/procedures protocols, standards of care, and procedures, fire and safety regulations, and other department specific requirements.
  • Facilitates associates maintaining competencies as evidenced by associates successfully completing annual performance appraisal and annual renewal of anniversary days, skills checklists. Coaches and guides associates to achieve performance expectations of their positions.

9. Manages the financial and physical resources of the specified areas within the fiscal and
productivity guidelines of the institution.)

  • Recommends the annual departmental budget(s) within the hospital's procedures and time frames.
  • Demonstrates a clear ability to adjust supply inventories, equipment, or capital expenditures to reflect activity and service measured by operating and productivity statistics of the department.
  • Assesses the number and skill mix of personnel needed to provide quality service and adjusts staffing assignments accordingly.
  • Demonstrated by meeting benchmarked productivity goals.
  • Anticipates technology growth and development in department, managing its use to enhance quality services and improve productivity.
  • Evaluates department's resources utilization and implements improvements that will enhance the resources of the overall
  • organization.

10. Provide effective leadership by establishing collaborative relationships at all levels through the
communication process and team work as evidenced by:

  • Demonstrates the ability to use all methods of communication to address inter and intra departmental concerns, problem-solve, address conflict, and create trust.
  • Facilitates collaborative patient care via Unit Practice Council, Daily Transition Rounds, Case Management, Patient Care Rounds, etc.
  • Functions as a role model by maintaining effective working relationships with all members of the hospital and medical staffs through cooperation, coordination, and mutual respect displayed while interfacing on an interdepartmental and multi disciplinary basis.
  • Demonstrates a positive problem-solving approach indicated by a resolution to mutual satisfaction from the other parties (i.e. patients, physicians, visitors, associates, co-workers, etc.)
  • Participates in community and/or professional organizations in order to promote the service of the department and the image of the hospital.
  • Participates in and actively supports ProMedica sponsored functions and activities in order to promote high moral among associates and the image of ProMedica.
  • Demonstrates dependability by completing commitments within requested time frames.

11. Assures positive outcomes; Provides services that enhance ProMedica to treat each patient as a
member of the family.

  • Coordinates and develops unit specific continuous quality process that compliments the hospital quality initiatives.
  • Develops and maintains current Standards of Care and ensures these standards are followed.
  • Promotes the implementation of a unit based case management system through development and use of critical pathways to guide delivery of
  • care.
  • Maintains compliance with The Joint Commission and other regulatory agencies.
  • Conducts on site rounds to review the quality of service.
  • Ensures departmental policies, decisions, and actions demonstrate regard for the rights, dignity, respect and confidentiality of all patients, family members, visitors, and ProMedica's associate staff.
  • Maintains environment conducive to safe, efficient, patient-centered quality care. Strives to constantly identify and improve the elements of service that increase the "customer's (patient)" level of satisfaction.

12. Develops and achieves department goals with support ProMedica's mission and strategic plan annually.
13. All other duties as assigned


  • Education: Bachelor's degree (BSN) in Nursing or commitment to obtain within 5 years of acceptance of position.
  • Skills: Must be able to move about hospital and between workstations; and prolonged periods of standing. Must be able to understand directions, communicate and respond to inquiries; requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to work in an office and/or patient care areas, may require extended hours and/or weekends to meet commitments and deadlines. Requires moderate physical effort and may be exposed to infectious diseases, blood, and other bodily fluids.
  • Years of Experience: Three to five (3-5) years' experience in patient care area.
  • License: State of Ohio current licensure to practice nursing.

  • Years of Experience: Three to five (3-5) years' management level experience
