Job Description

OBJECTIVE: The Director of Materials is responsible for the management of all aspects of materials flow and to the maintenance of controls and accuracy over all goods inventories, including all transactions, procuring, planning, scheduling, costing, warehousing, receiving, and shipping to ensure that customer orders are fulfilled on time. This position is also responsible to develop and manage all supplier relationships.

SUPERVISES: SeniorPurchasing Agent, Purchasing Coordinator, Warehouse Supervisor, Master Scheduler

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

§ Work with the Vice President of Finance to develop department strategic initiatives, metrics and measure performance against those initiatives.

§ Manage all Purchasing activities under the direction of the Vice President of Finance.

§ Establish purchasing policies and ensure compliance. Review and update policies as required.

§ Oversee the purchasing of company products and services, including raw materials, packaging supplies, and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations), in accordance with company policy.

§ Negotiate cash discounts, volume purchasing discounts, and OEM pricing with emphasis on cost reductions.

§ Select vendors, assess vendor capabilities, develop alternate sources, evaluate vendor performance and develop vendor performance metrics.

§ Address and resolve vendor performance and/or nonconformance issues.

§ Source new and existing materials for quality, best pricing, and service.

§ Recommend major purchases of materials based on anticipated changes in prices or unusual availability situations.

§ Review material inventory to production schedule to ensure proper inventory levels are maintained in accordance with Just in Time (JIT) manufacturing.

§ Ensure all purchasing documents are completed properly and the terms and conditions of purchases are appropriate.

§ Develop, negotiate, and ensure performance of supplier contracts and standard terms and conditions of Purchase Order (PO) requests.

§ Ensure department records are maintained and that purchases are followed up or expedited when required.

§ Obtain all required information from vendors to develop specifications.

§ Review and approve specifications.

§ Ensure specifications are provided to vendors as necessary.

§ Provide leadership for employees through effective communications, coaching, training, and development.

§ Travel to meet with vendors and suppliers as necessary.

§ Perform supplier audits.

§ Ensure compliance with cGMP, FDA, OSHA, and all other regulatory requirements in accordance with company policy.

§ Direct the management of material requirements to increase inventory turns and reduce and ensure accuracy of on-hand quantities.

§ Develop and maintain a Capacity Planning process through the Master Scheduler to forecast changes in staffing requirements and equipment capacities.

§ Oversee the Master Production Schedule, coordinating with other Production support groups to achieve corporate goals.

§ Adhere to company safety requirements.

§ Regular attendance.

§ Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

§ Bachelor’s degree in business or a combination of equivalent education and experience.

§ 5+ years’ experience in a purchasing role.

§ Prior supervisory experience.

§ Experience in a FDA-regulated manufacturing facility preferred.

§ Knowledge of cGMP regulations.

§ Excellent negotiating skills.

§ Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Word and Excel.

§ Good organizational skills.

§ Good attention to detail.

§ Ability to work both independently and as a member of a team.

§ Ability to prioritize tasks to meet established deadlines.

§ Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with people at all levels within the organization and external contacts.

§ Solid decision making skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

§ Frequently required to talk and hear.

§ Frequently required to sit and walk.

§ Occasionally required to stand.

§ Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
