Director of Legal Affairs, Regulatory

The Director of Legal Affairs, Regulatory will educate, counsel, and advocate for our business partners across the organization. This position will proactively advise internal business partners on a wide variety of legal, regulatory and compliance matters and work collaboratively with outside attorneys and stakeholders on issues that are both strategic and high risk. This role must have the ability to identify business and legal risks and provide solutions and recommendations that balance legal issues and business objectives. It is also the expectation of this role to plan and work with the Compliance team that supports the permitting, labeling, export and operational compliance of all facilities. More specifically, the role is responsible for anticipating the regulatory issues involved in all new projects and geographies, and establishing and maintaining systems to ensure customer, consumer and regulatory requirements are met. In this role, the Director will work closely with the company's Executive leadership team along with QA, Brand Manufacturing, Sales, Finance, HR, Manufacturing and Procurement departments.

Essential Functions

  • Provide legal advice to the company and executive leadership on regulatory law issues
  • Help develop a regulatory compliance function that provides advice and guidance on federal, state, local, and foreign regulatory agency requirements, restrictions or notices
  • Participate in the expansion planning process by researching regulations, providing recommendations and executing the permit process to ensure the plant starts up on time
  • Participate in federal and state rule making process by reviewing and commenting on proposed legislation, working closing with government relations and industry groups
  • Develop and implement environmental policies and procedures in compliance with federal, state and local regulations
  • Administer and control budget allocated to regulatory legal matters
  • Research sensitive and confidential business matters for the executive team and provide recommendations
  • Stay abreast of local, state, federal and international regulations understanding the existing and emerging regulations. Communicate any changes to the affected parties and the Vice President Legal Affairs, and provide guidance to maintain compliance
  • Provide regulatory support to external customers and internal teams as needed
  • Review acceptability and regulatory status of new products, ingredients, and processes for the US and international markets
  • Provide support and execute strategic quality and compliance initiatives and department projects
  • Develop and maintain regulatory network (formal and informal) by establishing relationship with various regulatory bodies, local consultants and legal entities within the respective countries / regions where the organization has business interests
  • Support the creation, review, approval and improvement of all labeling and advertising both internally and externally
  • Responsible for the development and execution of domestic and international regulatory strategies for new and modified products
  • Some travel required, < 20% - on average
