Position Summary:

The Director of Inventory Planning & Engineering reports to the Senior Director of Inventory & Logistics of the Johns Hopkins Health System (JHHS). This role is responsible for the continued development, promotion, and strategically-aligned performance of inventory, quality & effectiveness of the Supply Chain function across JHHS. This position provides leadership, strategic direction, oversight and management for a multi-functional and multi-level team, and supports the entity-based supply chain teams as well as Corporate Supply Chain initiatives in order to ensure seamless execution and realization of value across the enterprise.

The Director of Inventory Planning & Engineering will lead Supply Chain Inventory Planning and operational excellence strategy across all inventory locations throughout the healthcare network. Core responsibilities include maintaining fixed inventory targets, demand forecasts, supply plans, segmented safety stock parameters and oversite over inventory related KPIs. This involves building a team to effectively administrate the current set of tools while evaluating organization’s future needs.

This position will oversee Supply Chain’s LEAN/Continuous improvement activities at the Consolidated Service Center (CSC) and Johns Hopkins Health System facilities. This includes managing the capacity planning process for the CSC given both the short term & long-term supply plan as well as the strategic planning for any shifts in process/services. The role will also have oversite over process improvement opportunities at each hospital entity, driving waste out of the dock to stock & replenishment process.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Overseeing the administration and strategy behind supply chain planning tools including SAP MRP, SAP AOP, Manhattan, ParEx, & Pyxis.
  • Conducting quality assurance and control for analytics by validating inputs, outputs and methodologies/calculations across a wide range of project areas
  • Monitoring inventory activities, leading product implementations, improving inventory process in SAP, and managing inventory policies
  • Establishes and manages the key performance metrics to influence and drive business performance
  • Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders across JHHS member organizations and with Supply Chain staff

Competencies:

A. Education:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Engineering, or a related healthcare management field; a Master’s degree is preferred or equivalent experience.

B. Knowledge:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of supply chain and inventory, distribution, logistics, receiving, materials management, human resource management activities, project management activities, and ERP Supply Chain applications
  • Experience developing demand forecast and subsequent inventory policies
  • Demonstrated experience building a supply chain planning process
  • Knowledge of supply chain analytics including collection, cleansing, analysis and interpretation of supply chain data for a wide variety of project types and variety of organizational levels (e.g. corporate, warehouse, and entities).
  • Experience managing an Integrated Business Plan or S&OP process matching projected demand with supply and the budget required to execute
  • Experience in workforce management and demonstrated capability in financial management
  • Experience in supply chain in a health system, knowledge of product categories, and warehouse finance is preferred.

  • Advanced Microsoft Office experience (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); MS Access/Project preferred

D. Required Licensure, Certification

CMRP, CPM, Six Sigma or other accredited national supply chain certifications is preferred.





E. Work Experience

  • 8 years of experience in progressively more sophisticated inventory & logistics leadership roles required.
  • Detailed knowledge of warehouse, storeroom, and logistical operations required.
  • Experience with warehouse management systems, SAP and/or other health care supply chain ERP applications required.
  • Experience in optimization of inventory/logistics/materials management required.
  • Experience in a health care setting is preferred but not required.

F. Machines, Tools & Equipment

Ability to utilize office equipment, computer equipment and appropriate software tools. Experience with SAP preferred.




Dimensions:

A. Budget Responsibility:

  • Reviews and monitors inventory expense & revenue to track economics of the CSC.
  • Ensures labor expenses, overtime and non-productive time.
  • Responsible for achieving strategic goals within or below budget guidelines.
  • Develops department operating budgets and responsible for managing the JHHS Operational Excellence function.

B. Authority/Decision Making Level:

  • Has the independent decision-making authority and responsibilities that are included in all positions below this position.
  • Communicates and collaborates with warehouse, entity and Corporate Supply Chain departmental staff.
  • In collaboration with JHHS Human Resources, makes decisions related to departmental human resource management.
  • Is empowered to adjust staffing levels, work flow process design and departmental policies and procedures.

C. Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Responsible for a team of operational excellence staff.
  • Responsibilities include hiring staff, monitoring staff performance to expectation and promoting a positive and collegial work environment to enable high quality and timely service.





Problem Solving:

  • Developed ability to independently anticipate or identify problems, develop solutions and oversee the implementation of solutions to ultimate resolution.
  • Uses data supplied by managers to make recommendations for improvements or changes to processes. In addition, have the ability to extract and interpret data in the form of reports to address issues at a macro level.
  • Able to interpret complex data and provide actionable recommendations in line with the JHHS Supply Chain vision.
  • Participates in setting and enforcing departmental standards for analysis, development and quality assurance.

Information Management

Working Conditions:

  • Familiar with systems management, particularly for ERP, inventory, logistics support, and warehouse management systems
  • Must be able to analyze and interpret data to craft actionable recommendations
  • Oversees and maintains personnel files, negative time accounting, budgetary reports, productivity information and required regulatory documentation

Possible exposure to hazardous materials and pharmacological agents with little likelihood of harm if established health precautions are followed. Works in an office environment majority of the time. Attendance is required during disaster, emergencies and severe weather conditions, including staying for extended hours.
