Job Description
JOB
The EXCEL Student Learning Support department exists to provide efficacious, timely, and intentional individual and group study spaces where CCD students can be supported in learning and collaboration. The EXCEL Zone provides robust 1:1, group, and embedded tutoring support in Math & Physics, Writing & ESL, Study Skills & Digital Literacy through in-person and remote tutoring with a commitment to cultivating self-reliant learners.

EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties/Responsibilities Digital Zone Tutors (sometimes called Coaches) effectively assist students with concepts related to digital technology, literacy, and storytelling support. They provide high-quality customer service and a professional work environment for students within the Digital Zone. They bring (or develop) expertise in foundational technology use and digital storytelling to advance Digital Zone programming. Students may be currently enrolled in any course across the disciplines that includes digital skills. Tutoring includes one-on-one and small group work with students, class visits, and multiple delivery modes (face-to-face, WebEx, and phone calls). Assist studentsEffectively assist students in learning concepts related to digital technology use and video production in a variety of coursesSupport students with functional technology skills including—but not limited to—logging in, D2L navigation, CCDConnect, printing, uploading, as well as assignments such as PowerPoint presentations and edited digital storiesCultivate an inclusive, supportive, productive environment within the workspace and remain composed in tense situations when supporting studentsTreat all students equitably, fairly, and with the goal of a positive and helpful encounter; successfully engage one-on-one with underrepresented student populations—including, but not limited to—the following: students of color; first generation students; low-income students and students experiencing homelessness; students with differing learning styles and levels of English fluency; students with varying abilities and neurological differences; students of varying gender identitiesGreet students in a friendly manner; be approachable, communicate clearly, respectfully, and effectively; assist EXCEL Zone with student check-ins and general housekeeping Listen to student needs and foster the ability for students to engage with their work independently; possess (or be willing to develop) learning facilitator skillsManage loaning of equipment to students during shifts and troubleshoot basic computer, printer, and tablet issuesUtilize best practices for a variety of tutoring scenarios, including multiple delivery modes and multiple clientsDevelop students’ critical thinking skills through modeling and guided work Promote Digital Zone program Support outreach via outposts on campus and at special events when neededVisit classrooms to lead tutorials and/or inform students of EXCEL general servicesAdvocate for Zone development to better assist students with academic successCo-develop and facilitate student-facing workshops in digital literacy and storytelling Support Digital Zone program Document all tutoring sessions as instructed and treat student info in accordance with Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)Report any unresolved computer problems to Coordinators or ITAssist with daily and periodic tutoring space maintenanceAttend all department meetings and regularly scheduled trainings required by EXCEL, Digital Zone, and HRAssist with administrative duties as neededSupport Digital Zone projects as needed when not working with studentsCreate video, audio, visual, or written resources to promote or instruct Digital Zone concepts Time Commitment Tutoring hours are available for morning, afternoon, and evening shifts, Monday through Friday. Schedules are typically set for the semester, and tutoring services and hours are not scheduled during times that classes are not in session. Mandatory tutor trainings are held prior to the start of the fall and spring semesters and are required before tutors begin work each semester. Tutors are also expected to attend team meetings throughout the semester and to complete any required HR trainings as scheduled. Work study tutors must stay under the maximum hours defined by their institution’s policy.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Current student at Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State University of Denver, or the University of Colorado Denver who is taking at least six hours of credit and awarded financial aid work-study funds. - minimum GPA 2.75 (new students exempt first semester) - must be in good academic standing Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Outlook, D2L, Webex, and WeVideo (or proficient in technology and willing to learn) - Excellent customer service skills - Be a self-starter - Ability to work well as part of a team - Ability to learn and adapt to student needs - Demonstrate responsibility, reliability, collegiality, and dependability - Willing to maintain current skills and practices in the field - Experience working with people from diverse backgrounds such as individuals with a disability, racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, and LGBTQ communities

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, D2L, Webex, and WeVideo (or similar video editing technology) - Study skills knowledge, or willingness to learn- Customer service background - Experience working in an urban minority-majority college
