Position Description

TWO YEAR TERM POSTION
POSITION POSTED: AUGUST 2021
SALARY RANGE: $81,600 - $129,000 (SS II)

Design and construct Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technology for applications in nuclear physics and biomedical systems research.
Insure the Detector Group and its facilities are fully equipped to pursue the development of MPGDs for nuclear physics and bio-medical projects.

  • Explore the development and implementation of state-of-the art MPGD based technology.
  • Explore advanced methods for involving gaseous detectors to assist with 12 GeV program detector development and implementation in bio-medical projects.
  • Stay current of the latest developments and publish when appropriate.
  • Seek sources of outside funding through proposal writing.
  • Stay current of detector development trends through publications/meetings and report on the Detector Group’s detector development related research in appropriate journals.
  • Assist with detector technology issues and maintenance related to the 12 GeV program and the EIC program by taking the initiative and when requested.
  • Assist in the development of a new MPGD laboratory as part of the new Jefferson Lab Biomedical Technology Center

Position Requirements

Education and Experience:
Ph.D. in physics and 5 years of experience in experimental nuclear or high energy physics gas-based detector simulation, design and construction.

Knowledge,Skills and Abilities:
Ability to develop MPGD systems, including development of readout electronics and data acquisition systems. Familiarity with scintillators, photomultipliers and solid state detectors.
Demonstrated programming skills as applied to data acquisition instrumentation and data analysis.
Demonstrated ingenuity and creativity with the ability to work with a team.
Ability to author and co-author publications refereed publications and conference papers.

  • Ability to comprehend, formulate, and communicate highly abstract concepts
  • Ability to express or exchange complex ideas by means of spoken and written communication
  • Ability to analyze and interpret complex data and develop models

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to traverse across various locations on the laboratory site and access work areas
  • Ability to lift up to 10 pounds frequently and 25 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to stoop, bend over and climb ladders
  • Ability to work on a computer for extended periods
  • Visual capabilities sufficient to use computer workstations, read documents, and see safety alarms
  • Auditory capabilities to hear safety alarms
