Job Description

At American Express, the Design Operations Manager/Senior Design Operations Manager wears a lot of hats. You need to be a process expert, closeted designer, natural leader, passionate about digital experiences, and a trusted team player all rolled into one. You will join a growing Commercial digital team in the US & UK that works with product partners to develop innovative solutions that work across a variety of digital touch-points. You will be the design advocate from concept to launch, understanding partner needs, project timelines, technology limitations and business goals.

The Design Operations Manager/Senior Design Operations Manager should be extremely well organized, someone who understands the workings of a creative team and is comfortable managing design deliverables and cross-functional teams. This person should be a strong relationship builder who feels comfortable being the communication hub that keeps everything working smoothly and ensures on-time delivery.

Daily tasks include facilitating workflows across multiple projects, scheduling and leading meetings between the design team, research teams and various product owners, creating timelines and managing schedules, and maintaining communication with satellite team’s in UK & Phoenix. The ideal candidate will have a strong passion for digital design, for customer needs and new technology, for problem-solving, and is a team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Actively define, prioritize and ensure delivery of B2B user experiences for key online initiatives

  • Lead multiple projects from inception to post-delivery

  • Manage deliverables, timelines, dependencies and project expectations

  • Schedule and lead meetings between design team, research teams and various product teams

  • Oversee projects and facilitate decision making by collaborating with partners across American Express, including: Design, Product, Technology, Marketing, Finance, Legal, Compliance, Risk, and Brand.

  • Communicate progress, risks and issues to leadership and business partners

  • Work with partners to ensure projects have clear goals and success metrics

  • Manage changes to scope and timelines within the overall business, design, and development needs, in addition to monitoring team bandwidth, capacity and velocity

  • Own and manage files and creative asset delivery

  • Build and manage relationships with product owners, business partners, and external agencies

  • Drive the effective use of design process as a business instrument

  • Use design thinking to facilitate a group through the ideation and feedback cycles that are the foundation of a great user experience

  • Actively identify, solution, implement, and maintain team process improvements

  • Consistent communication and knowledge sharing across American Express design groups and divisions
  • 3+ years of digital project management experience with specific knowledge of working within a design team

  • Strong problem solver and design thinker with demonstrated experience managing multiple projects and complex initiatives involving cross-functional teams within budgetary and schedule constraints

  • Assertive and collaborative, with the ability to challenge the status quo and drive innovation

  • Knowledge of the technology space and Agile development methodologies

  • Experience working in project management software such as Confluence and JIRA

  • Experience juggling competing priorities, with multiple projects being delivered at pace and scale

  • Ability to function effectively in a matrixed environment and influence without direct authority

  • Awareness/understanding of the role of user testing in design validation

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Knowledge of design software’s such as Adobe Creative Cloud, Sketch, & Invision
