Class Summary

The Gwinnett County Planning and Development Department includes four divisions: The Administrative Division; the Planning Division; the Plan Review Division; and the Permits, Inspections, and Enforcement Division. With approximately 120 employees the Department provides services related to planning, zoning, development, permits, licenses, inspections, and code enforcement. The mission of the Department is to plan, preserve, and build a healthy community through continuous engagement and superior customer care. The Department accomplishes this mission through programs and services that encourage high quality development as well as maintenance and revitalization of existing neighborhoods. As one of two Deputy Directors in the department, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the Planning and Plan Review Divisions, as well as acting as the third-in-command in the absence of the director and assistant director. In this role, you will be working with the Board of Commissioners, county administration, and various committees and task forces, communicating with developers, designers, contractors, the public, and various governmental agencies. As an ideal candidate, you should have skills in problem solving, multi-tasking, adapting to rapidly changing environments, negotiating, communicating, managing, mentoring, collaboration, and team building.

Essential duties include:


  • Managing, updating, and implementing the County’s Comprehensive Plan (2040 Unified Plan)
  • Reviewing processes and procedures to ensure they are effective, efficient, and innovative
  • Determining and implementing new and innovative ideas for department work processes
  • Providing managerial, supervisory support, and staff evaluation to division directors
  • Directing day-to-day activities including planning, coordinating, administering, and evaluating programs, projects, processes, procedures, systems, standards, and services
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and codes, as well as county policies and procedures
The grade for this position is 305. Salary will be dependent on qualifications.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in planning or a related field
  • Eight years of progressively responsible experience in planning or a related field
  • Two years of management experience
An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will also be considered.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in planning or a related field
  • Four years of management experience
  • Local government planning experience
  • American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Certification
