The Database Specialist II will support our federal clients and partners in their efforts supporting the Greater Everglades Ecological Research Program, engage in field-oriented research on populations of wetland faunal communities and their habitats.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Candidate should be a capable Database Specialist able to modify an existing PostgreSQL/PostGIS geospatial database that contains wildlife data for long-term storage and efficient retrieval of American Crocodile data.

We are seeking a team member to work directly with federal scientists, and the project managers to modify this database and the associated front-end (web-based) tools for data entry and access. The position will also work collaboratively with university scientists and natural resource managers.

  • Modify existing wildlife database structure to support a spatial crocodile database on a secure server
  • The will also compiling and publishing research of inherent scientific merit, contributing to knowledge of the life history, ecology, and systematics of Greater Everglades vertebrates.
  • Such research is also of significance to the conservation and management of living vertebrate resources, particularly on behalf of partner DOI bureaus.
  • Modify existing wildlife database structure to support front-end access tools for non-experts (biologists and natural resource managers)
  • Integrate existing environmental data with crocodile data to facilitate spatial analyses
  • Adopt an existing workflow for managing and updating the database
  • Train, mentor, and learn from other team members on technical topics
  • Fully document the database design, functionality, and security
  • All data integrated into new SQL database
  • Recreation of queries and scripts for QA/QC purposes
  • Recreation of queries and scripts for research question-specific queries (e.g., capture-mark-recapture analyses)
  • Database construction done with reporting as scheduled
  • Intermediate and final summaries on schedule
  • A monthly report describing the progress and status of work

SUPERVISORY/MANAGEMENT AUTHORITY

N/A. Will defer to the CNSS Program Manager and CNT Site Lead, may coordinate with client representative (Task Order Manager)

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

A relevant undergraduate degree will be preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Use of custom SQL database and proficiency with pgAdmin, R, and RStudio is required. Experience with Shiny app is preferred.

Required expertise/skills:

  • Experience utilizing enterprise-level geospatial database systems, particularly in PostgreSQL/PostGIS
  • Experience working with spatial data and map products in ESRI ArcGIS or QGIS
  • Experience utilizing web-based front-ends for data entry and querying
  • Experience collaborating with data analysts or scientists

Preferred skills:

    • Experience migrating legacy data from flat spreadsheets to relational databases
    • Experience leveraging open data sources and mapping tools
    • Familiarity with remotely sensed data
    • Familiarity with preparing data for quantitative analyses using R
    • Familiarity with geography, natural resources, or spatial ecology

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Office and/or teleworking environment. Some overnight travel will be required. A driver's license will be required for local travel
