2021-2022 CORNELL INFORMATION SCIENCE TENURE-TRACK FACULTY SEARCH, NYC CAMPUS

The Cornell University Department of Information Science (IS) in the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science (CIS) has tenure track and tenured faculty positions available. The IS Department spans Cornell’s Ithaca and New York City campuses; our nearly 40 faculty members are leaders in their respective fields within Information Science's interdisciplinary structure, specializing in areas such as machine learning, artificial intelligence, human-computer interaction, ubiquitous computing, user-experience design, as well as ethics, law and policy.

Faculty hired for this NYC campus search will have their teaching and research based at Cornell Tech in New York City. This year’s search is primarily focused on hiring candidates with research focus in the intersection of design and technology, or in fairness, accountability, and transparency in computational systems. We are especially interested in candidates whose scholarship and service further the department’s goals around diversity and inclusion. Candidates in other areas related to the department’s research (see https://infosci.cornell.edu/research) may also be considered.

Cornell Tech is a graduate campus of Cornell University located on Roosevelt Island in New York City. It includes the Jacobs Technion-Cornell Institute, a joint academic venture between Cornell and the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. Cornell Tech's academic environment encourages tight integration across disciplines in technology, business, law, and design, couples fundamental research with practice, and supports societal and commercial ventures alongside research and education. In addition to world-class academic work, a distinguishing characteristic of our research is that it engages deeply with external communities, organizations, and industry to address real-world problems and contexts that amplify the direct societal and commercial impact of our research. Hubs in Health Tech, Urban Tech, and Public Interest Tech exemplify this approach, bringing together researchers, practitioners and communities to collaborate. These connections support the IS department’s mission to advance its understanding of how people and society interact with computing and information.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree by August 2022. (In the creative and performing arts, or in certain professional studies, a degree other than the Ph.D. or its foreign equivalent may be considered an equivalent degree.) Candidates should also have a strong commitment to engagement outside of academia in ways that foster significant commercial or societal impact, as aligned with the mission of the Cornell Tech campus. Assistant Professor candidates must demonstrate the potential to achieve excellence in research and teaching at the graduate level. More senior candidates must have an established record of outstanding research and excellent teaching at the graduate level; salary, rank, and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Candidates should submit a cover letter, curriculum vitae (CV), research, teaching, external engagement and diversity, equity and inclusion statements.

The letter, CV, or research statement should identify a small set of their most significant pieces of work. Candidates are also welcome but not required to submit a link to a portfolio of their work.

A distinguishing characteristic of research at Cornell Tech is that it engages deeply with external communities, organizations, K-12 education, and industry to address real-world problems and contexts that amplify the direct commercial and societal impact of our research. The external engagement statement should address prior accomplishments and future plans related to the commercial and/or broader public engagement and societal impact dimensions of their research and teaching.

Candidate’s statement of diversity, equity, and inclusion is an opportunity for candidates to describe how their research, teaching, and/or service will contribute to a diverse, inclusive climate. Diversity and Inclusion are a part of Cornell University's heritage. We are a recognized employer and educator valuing AA/EEO, Protected Veterans, and Individuals with Disabilities. We also recognize a lawful preference in employment practices for Native Americans living on or near Indian reservations. Fostering an inclusive environment is also a core value of the Ann S. Bowers College of Computing and Information Science. In line with Cornell’s historical commitment to educating “…any person…in any study…”, we seek candidates who will create a climate that helps attract and is inclusive of all students, including students from historically underrepresented groups and students who have overcome personal challenges. See https://facultydevelopment.cornell.edu/department-resources/recruitment/contribution-to-diversity/ for more information, including suggestions for elements we look for in such statements, as well as https://tech.cornell.edu/impact/diversity-inclusion/ for information about related resources at Cornell Tech for Diversity and Inclusion.

The above application materials should be submitted online at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/19575, along with the names of at least three people who will provide reference letters. To ensure full consideration, complete applications (including reference letters) should be received by December 1, 2021, but applications will be accepted until the search has concluded. Inquiries about your application may be directed to fac_recruit@infosci.cornell.edu.
