Campus Recreation: Coordinator, Fitness

Boise State University invites interested applicants for the position of Coordinator of Rec Sports to become a part of the Campus Recreation team as we build an engaged community that encourages healthy, active people and enhances student success.



Job Summary/Basic Function:

Responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Student Recreation Center including Student Staff Supervision, Facility Operations, Facility Scheduling and Event Management, as well as Risk Management and Security.

You will have the opportunity to:

Oversee the administration and management of Campus Recreation’s Fitness Program. This includes but is not limited to: program development, staff hiring, training, and supervision of student and part-time employees, education delivery to students, staff, and Rec Center members. Major programming responsibilities include group exercise, personal training, special events, and educational workshops for students, staff, and Rec Center members.



Level Scope:

Entry-level professional with limited or no prior experience to contribute on a project or work team. Incumbent learns to use professional concepts to resolve problems of limited scope and complexity under close supervision while achieving day-to-day objectives. Works on developmental assignments that are initially routine in nature, requiring limited judgment and decision making. This level is typically focused on self development. Requires theoretical knowledge through specific education and training.



Essential Functions:

The breakdown of the position duties:

  • 40% staff supervision, staff development
  • 35% program development and management
  • 10% risk management
  • 10% fiscal management
  • 5% department leadership and support


JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Coordinate the development and implementation of on-site instructional workshops and
    certifications, special events, and incentives related to group exercise to support the
    ongoing professional development of fitness instructors.
  • Operate, monitor, and manage a variety of software applications relevant to the Fitness
    Program including, but not limited to: Innosoft Fusion Recreation Management Software,
    Connect 2 Concepts (C2C), Qualtrics, When to Work, Wordpress, and Handshake.
  • Ensure the highest possible level of customer service in order to provide exceptional
    experiences.
  • Create and maintain outreach opportunities within the campus community to promote the
    Group Exercise Program.
  • Maintain and revise operation and policy manuals for all the Fitness Program; including
    group exercise and personal training.
  • Work closely with other departmental staff to schedule facilities and avoid conflicts in
    facilities used by group fitness and personal training program areas.
  • Research and recommend appropriate equipment purchases for continued operations and
    growth of the Fitness Program.
  • Inventory and maintain all fitness equipment accessories and supplies to ensure quality,
    safety and security.

Personal Training

  • Directly oversee the day-to-day operations of the Personal Training Program, including
    scheduling of clients, personal trainers, and on-going staff training to ensure patron safety
    and client satisfaction.
  • Train, coach, and evaluate the Personal Training staff on methods and best practices to
    provide safe instruction while achieving client’s personal fitness goals.
  • Develop and implement recordkeeping practices and procedures to ensure client
    confidentiality within the Personal Training Program.
  • Create and maintain outreach opportunities within the campus community to promote the
    Personal Training Program.

Summer Youth Sports Program

  • Assist in the day-to-day camp operations of the Summer Youth Sports Program as directed
    by supervisor.


Other Duties 5% of Time the Position must:
Department Leadership and Support

  • In conjunction with the Campus Recreation professional staff; participate, lead, and/or
    coordinate Departmental initiatives including Fall Orientation, Get Rec’d, etc.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Possess a basic knowledge of student development methods and practices, facility operations and management, facility scheduling and event management, risk management and safety, and budgeting.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Attention to detail, communication, and abstract problem solving skills
  • Exemplary customer service skills with the ability and willingness to communicate with a wide variety of customers, colleagues, and personnel.
  • Demonstrated strong conflict management skills and the ability to adjudicate conflict.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent relevant professional experience.


Preferred Qualifications:


  • Prefer Master’s Degree in Recreation, Sport Management, Athletic Administration, Business Administration, Kinesiology, or related field
  • Direct personnel management experience of student employee teams: recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, evaluating, and disciplining
  • Practical experience developing personalized fitness programs and group classes
  • Budget development and budget management experience
  • Two years work experience managing operations of an Fitness Program in higher education
  • Experience in oral and written communication such as teaching:
    • Developing/delivering presentation content/materials; writing reports, proposals, professional correspondence, manuals, etc.
  • Experience programming or service delivery for diverse community populations

Salary starts at $40,850 depending on experience.
