DESCRIPTION

The position is a full-time teaching assignment in the Rhetoric & Literacy division.


REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES

  • In addition to teaching 15 lecture hour equivalents per semester, full-time faculty are responsible for five office hours per week and preparation time, and are expected to participate in faculty / division meetings and yearly program review.
  • Full-time faculty also participate in curricular planning, student learning outcomes: data collection and writing action plans, program learning outcomes, development, assessment, and implementation; evaluation of educational programs; and college governance contributory to the attainment of the college's mission and strategic goals.
  • Instructors may be assigned a combination of daytime, evening, and/or Saturday classes, as the college is dedicated to the educational success of a diverse student body with diverse needs.
  • Continued professional development through the Faculty Professional Development Program or other sources is required.
  • Travel between District locations may be required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

(Applicant must meet one of the following)

  • Most current Minimum Qualifications for Faculty in California Community Colleges: Master's in speech, speech broadcasting, telecommunications, rhetoric, communications, communication studies, speech communication, or organizational communication OR Bachelor's in any of the above AND Master's in drama/theater arts, mass communication, or English.
  • Antelope Valley College Equivalency: No Equivalency per division faculty


AND a sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students (Assembly Bill 1725; Education Code 87360).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Preference will be given to those candidates who establish the highest level of professional competency as evidenced by any or all of the following:
  • Successful experience teaching Communication Studies at the community college level.
  • A strong "generalist background" and teaching experience in the field of Communication Studies to include public speaking.
  • Teaching experience and academic background in one or more of the following: argumentation and debate, media studies, public relations, interpersonal communication, small group communication, and/or forensics.
  • Demonstrates effectiveness as a classroom instructor.
  • Knowledge of diverse learning styles and teaching pedagogies as well as, experience in teaching students from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and widely varying levels of student preparedness.
  • A commitment to the mission of community colleges and to teaching at the community college level of higher education.
  • Demonstrates experience in: developing and revising curriculum, assessing student learning outcomes, and participating in program review documents.
  • Ability to collaborate with colleagues to promote and implement innovative ideas and a shared vision for the Communication Studies program for the benefit of students.
  • Working knowledge of computer technology and software such as Canvas or other similar Learning Management Systems, and Zoom or other similar online communication software.
