Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Clinical Nurse Manager is an experienced leader responsible for managing assigned areas and services and supervising assigned patient care staff to promote the creation of a center of excellence for staff recruitment and retention and clinical and business outcomes. The Nurse Manager is responsible to ensure safe and effective delivery of patient care and clinical outcomes, compliance with regulatory, administrative and clinical standards, and policies and procedures. The Nurse Manager serves as a chief retention and safety officer. He/she ensures that safety and quality standards are upheld by effective use of data and technology to make decisions and proactively mitigates unnecessary risks for his/her area of responsibility. The Nurse Manager creates and ensures a desirable, safe work environment that enables the organization to meet or exceed its mission and goals. He/she models the way to foster communication and collaboration with physicians, staff, patients and other departments. Role specific competencies, responsibilities, roles and functions are based on the Professional Practice Model. This position reports to the Director of Nursing or above.

AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Under general direction, maintains 24-hour responsibility and accountability for providing leadership and management of a designated patient care unit which promotes quality nursing care, cost effective use of resources and professional growth for nursing staff. Promotes a Patient Family Centered Care Culture.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

1. Manages the Human Resources of the unit to ensure the achievement of Department Goals including employee satisfaction, staff retention, and performance.

2. Assists in the development and maintains operations of the unit within fiscal and productivity guidelines as set forth by annual budgetary process.

3. Demonstrates commitment to clinical quality while focusing on quality clinical outcomes.

4. Collaborates with care management, the medical staff, and the interdisciplinary team to promote smooth, timely, and efficient patient throughput.

5. Ensures consistent Unit Council meetings are led by staff nurses.

6. Maintains materials and resources for staff.

7. Assures all new RN hires attend GN residency class.

8. Meets with all new hires 1:1 in first the week of department orientation; limits preceptors for each new hire and assures preceptor documentation is timely.

9. Develops and achieves annual department goals that support the Mission and Vision.

10. Demonstrates effective leadership and professional development including attendance at leadership development classes.

11. Upholds professional standards of care by demonstrating leadership skills and a high level of clinical knowledge while striving to achieve the system Mission and Vision.

12. Participates in activities that promote good will and/or exposure in the community.

13. Seeks ongoing learning experiences in order to keep current with practice and promote self-growth.

14. Maintains current nursing license and any additional VISA’s/Certifications.

15. Demonstrates Customer Focus, Patient Experience, and Patient and Family Centered Care.

16. Ensures and enhances facility, safety, and regulatory outcomes including Joint Commission, CMS, National Patient Safety Goals and compliance to Restraint/Seclusion policies and procedures.

17. Completes all mandatory training/education/competencies required for job classification, along with TB testing.

18. Demonstrates knowledge of chain of command process and initiates as needed.

STANDARD QUALIFICATIONS

A. Education / Training: Bachelor’s degree in nursing required, master’s degree preferred.

B. Work Experience: 3-5 years of nursing leadership experience required.

C. Certification, Licensure, Registration: RN license in the State of Michigan. Nursing specialty certification required within 1 year.
