The hotel will be one of the most anticipated new destinations in Tacoma, with 194 rooms and suites on the waterfront, 15,000 square feet of meeting space, a vibrant restaurant and bar and a rejuvenating day spa. An integral part of the leadership management team, the Chief Maintenance Engineer is responsible for the overall operation of the maintenance department and maintaining the physical integrity/working order and appearance of the building, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. This role also oversees the operation of our safety and security programs.

People and Team Building

  • Participates in building an engaged team morale as part of the leadership team.

  • Effectively manages a team including but not limited to recruiting, training, scheduling, and managing performance of maintenance and engineering professionals. Delegates work orders in a timely and professional manner.
  • Is self-motivated, able to think and work independently as well as with others, with an emphasis on collaboration and team building.
  • Works closely with other departments to maintain a clean and safe work environment.

Problem Solver and Communicator

  • Effectively communicates with the management about new ideas, problems, capital expense needs, and any other issues that affect the overall operation.
  • Is able to provide open and effective lines of communication and address issues or concerns in a prompt and efficient manner. Establishes adequate reporting tools to communicate damages, hazards, and/or any other incidents to the leadership and management team. Reports and addresses unsafe conditions immediately.
  • Manages guest issues resolution in a prompt and friendly manner, including internal guests.

Planning ahead, Working Safe!

  • Responsible for the proper treatment and care of tools and equipment used to perform tasks. Ensures all maintenance and engineering storerooms and work spaces are kept in a clean and orderly manner, storing all tools, equipment and spare parts safely in their proper location.
  • Ensures the security, cleanliness, preventive maintenance and repair of all engineering department tools, equipment and safety features are in accordance of established procedures and budgets.
  • Is part of the Emergency Response Team in a leadership role, to respond to emergencies.
  • Ensures maintenance team supports, helps coordinate and execute monthly, quarterly and annual upkeep projects, including but not limited to other departments of the hotel.
  • Ensures that everything is in proper working order. Maintains accurate records of all completed work performed in guest rooms and other areas of the hotel.
  • Coordinates special projects without hindering daily routine.
  • Prioritizes repairs, such as stay-overs that need immediate attention.
  • Oversees the hotel safety program, including being the chairperson of the monthly safety meetings.

WHO YOU ARE…what do you need?

  • English proficiency: expected ability to read, write and speak English fluently to be able to read, analyze, and interpret financial reports, legal documents, and industry trade publications.
  • High School graduate minimum or equivalent. College engineering degree preferred, plus 2-5 years related experience and/or training; or relevant combination of education and experience encompassing managing a maintenance team in hospitality or public venues preferred, including managing multiple skill trades.
  • Previous hotel opening experience a plus.
  • Ability to interpret documents, such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as communicating through language barriers. Ability to interpret technical instructions, diagrams or blueprints, routine reports and correspondence.
  • General knowledge, trouble shooting ability of, and ability to perform maintenance and general repair, including but not limited to: plumbing, HVAC repair, electrical systems, painting, floor and wall covering, woodworking and carpentry, carpet repair and replacement, safety monitoring systems, A/V systems, culinary equipment, in room technology, pool maintenance.

Compensation: based on experience.
